How's the job market in Louisville?
My wife and I are considering relocating to Louisville, but job availabilityis one thing I wonder about. She is an RN, so no problems with her finding work, but it may be harder for me. I have a 4-yr. degree in Business administration and was working for Citibank, but my position was cut. I've had no luck finding anything here in St. Louis for the past 6 months, this city has the 2nd highest unemployment rate in the nation behind Detroit. Jobs are leaving here by the thousands each year. I know the job market in Louisville HAS to be better than here, but how healthy is it in general?

I believe that 99/100 people still looking for career level work in Louisville will find such a position. It won't be quite as easy as in the past, but the market for high quality people still has opportunities.
If your situation allows, now is a good time to look at real estate, too. My firm is looking for professional people who are interested in earning $300,000-600,000 over the next five years.

smaller banks that have been working on expansion will hire you in a second. Unfortunately, I believe you'll need to move first. Look into First Capital Bank or Republic Bank. I personally know that Republic has lost bankers lately and has had a hard time filling positions because of a lack of qualified personnel.

This sounds good.
I have an impeccable work record and excellent credentials from school, so I've really never had a problem getting a job, that is if there are jobs available unlike here.
I saw that real estate prices in Louisville are fairly low compared to here. We have been renting here because prices are too high here. I saw that one can find a very nice home in Louisville for $250,000. That's the price we are shooting for. Here $250,000 will get you a 50-year old 800 sq. ft. home in bad repair in a dangerous neighborhood & that's about it. We plan to pay cash for our home as we don't believe in debt. Anyway, Louisville sounds pretty promising so far.

Bad job market in Louisville
Ford layoffs lots of people and GE appliances going out of business. No other big employer in the city. I think it is bad Louisville economy. one or two get a job...but there is no economical up steam as of now... I guess.
But Lexington do have little market to its magnitude. I have seen IT jobs in job post at Lexington.
On the other hand Indianapolis market is OK as of now as there are no layoff or sell offs . Super bowl targeting for 2012, you can expect better economy in here in the next 7 years...More hotels, restaurants, real estate, business visibility.....
But any mid west cities are better than major cities in US. I have seen people migrating from NY/NJ to small cities in here.... good luck.

I'm sorry, but GE Appliances is not "going out of business". That is not what was reported, and that is not what you read. GE is looking to sell the business for between $5 and $8 billion. That is not a broke business. Furthermore, there is nothing to suggest that the eventual buyer will move the appliance business out of Louisville. There may be some manufacturing jobs lost, but the white collar jobs would remain.
If you look at the construction industry, it is going very strong in Louisville. The downtown office space is at a low vacancy rate, and suburban spec office space continues to go up. I would say the economy is as it always is. Not booming, not busting. It's pretty steady here. That remains even today.

Thank you!!! It hurts me most about discussion forums when people give such terribly incorrect information. I appreciate you for helping to set the record straight.
Louisville does not have a bad economy!!! There are issues, of course, but the previously incorrect writer didn't even mention UPS or the thriving medical Louisville complex of hospitals, research centers, etc. No one ever mentions the huge insurance industry here either. Humana and Kentucky Farm Bureau are huge employers. Let's not forget there are over 10,000 employees of the Jefferson County Public Schools, not to mention higher learning staffs at University of Louisville, Bellermine, Jefferson CTC, the University of Indiana, and shall I go on!
Last year, how many people died in airliner crashes around the world, yet every crash made news, but we barely note the huge number of fatalities on our roads and streets. The news media doesn't sell by delivering good news. Good news such as the lights at the ends of the tunnel. We have had two major firms hurt by the increase in the cost of fuel, but guess what, the farmers will be buying trucks this year! And GE needs the cash from the Appliance Park to pay for poor corporate management of its media and international divisional results.
