I live in the J-town area and work in the downtown area and am wondering if anyone with a similar commute is biking to work? If so, what route do you take? Every route that I consider seems a bit dangerous or out of the way. Bike lanes do not extend as far down Taylorsville Rd. as I live and I would be on two-lanes alot of the time. I'm already taking the bus, just curious about alternatives and other people's experiences. Thanks.

I doubt it. That is sprawling suburbia, and is well over 10 miles from downtown. If it all possible, I would consider moving closer in to a bike friendly area like the Highlands or Crescent Hill.

Hit the nail on the head!

Clifton, Butchertown, and Brownsboro Rd. west of Zorn Ave. (which is for all intents and purposes part of Clifton, anyway) are other areas worth considering.

We are coming to L-ville / Springhill Suites for a few days next week
to look at neighborhoods for possible relocation. Everything Ive read
says Louisville is very bike friendly and I am really hoping that is the
case. We will be looking at Highland/Germantown and Crescent areas
to name a few. Any other suggestions ? Bike commuting is a priority.

.::EDIT::. Ok, I see above post ^^^^ Thank you !

Highlands, downtown, Old Louiville, Germantown, Butchertown, Clifton, Crescent Hill, even the Heart of St Matthews. Of course this is a VERY broad and large area roughly bounded by 9th street on the west, and inside I-264 loop. There are a few bad pockets in that region, mainly the square mile area known as smoketown bounded by Brook St on the West, Broadway on the North, Hill St on the South, and Logan St on the East.

The city is slightly above average for biking, but not great. There are designated bike lanes on East Main and Market, and Third street through Old Louisville. This makes Butchertown and Old Louisville possibly the most bikable areas. These areas are quite diverse and have beautiful old homes mixed with some industrial grit. I personally love the gritty feel of an urban area though. The Highlands is much denser and much more upscale, with great biking along Cherokee Road where turn of the century mansions and highrises face Cherokee Park around Willow Avenue.

Incidentally, many people do not realize how helpful the above city website is!!! (oh and dont forget the power of google)

Unfortunately moving is not an option for me. I am really interested in hearing from people who are living in my area (J-town) and are actually commuting by bike.

i never thought jtown was sprawling suburbia. it's actually losing population. but yes, it does have the strip malls and such.
