Wild Eggs in Dupont is also very good. Expect a wait if you visit on the weekends.
Review with a link to their menu

If the poster wants another option close to downtown, try Lynn's Paradise Cafe, which is just east of downtown.

FWIW,
All the spots listed are great, however you will overpay for location, ambiance, etc... If you are looking for a greasy spoon, unpretentious, home run breakfast that will fill your gut for under $5 there are only 2 places in Louisville that I have found. The true indicator that they fit the above criteria is that they only accept cash, so hit the ATM before you go.
The first is Dizzy Whizz located at 217 W Saint Catherine St, 40203
The second is Barbara Lee's Kitchen located at 2410 Brownsboro Rd, 40206.

I can second the recommendation for Barbara Lee's. I really enjoy spending a Sunday evening down at Captain's Quarters, and then going and having breakfast at Barbara Lee's at 2:30 in the morning! I just don't like it on Monday morning

If that is what you want, there are many more option's than that for the greasy spoon:
One of the yummiest and most retro, almost weird dive breakfast spots is Juanita's Burgery Boy. It is open 24/7 365 days a year, even Christmas:
Old Louisville Restaurants, Taverns and Watering Holes
Mr Z's also fits that role nicely on that list above.
For an international, quirky kinda breakfast, try this:
cafe 360
It is also open 24/7
You DO get what you pay for. The food at Toast and Wild Eggs is much better because it comes from chefs using superior, inventive ingredients, so you get what you pay for. It's like saying there's no difference between Levi's and Seven Jeans. However, if you want a whole in the wall, cheap dive place, any of Amac's or my recs would suffice.
