kim45,
I suggest private schools. There are too many to name. In my opinion DeSales HS is the best. (Go Colts). I like private schools. Easter HS is a good public school, but private is the way to go. DeSales is one on the cheapest in the area (You can only get in if your child is a male). I suggest suburban, normally less crime and normally better fire/EMS/police response time. 40218 and 40219 are not the greatest, better than some but not a lot. 40218 has a lot of sex offenders, about 30 in one apt. complex. '219 is mainly blacks and crime. 40217 is one of the safest and it was listed as the safest zip code in the city once. If you could be more specific I could help you out more.

One funny story I always remember about Louisville was once on a tour of the Kennedy Space Center in Fla. During a long drive between stops, the tour bus driver started asking who was from each state. When he got to Ky., of course we let out a yell. He said he had a question. Is the capital of Kentucky pronounced Looavul or Lewisville. My brother's friend yelled back "Frankfort!" Several good laughs through the bus on that one. It's an old joke, but still funny every now and then.

I had to laugh when I read this part, because it is totally true! I just moved here a week ago from the Detroit area, and I had a lawn service guy come over yesterday afternoon to look at the poison ivy problem in my backyard and he must have stayed at least 30 minutes just chatting away about the area and his family! I have already met two of my neighbors and the same thing. People like to VISIT and CHAT----just something NICE to get used to!

Louisville as I saw it!
I was in town last week to scope the place out as there is a possibility of me relocating in a month or two. Seriously, I was very impressed at the sight of the city with quite a few construction in progress which signifies growth and opportunity. The neatest and walkable downtown I have seen so far. Folks down there are so friendly and polite. I think I have found a path to my dreams. Will love to meet a few forumers one day when my transfer goes thru so we can enjoy some maker's mark at the Bourbon House and Lounge on 4th street live! Shhhhh lest I forget, I'm going to keep this discovery on a low low!!!

The best public high schools in the city are hands-down are Manual, Louisville Male, Ballard and Eastern. Butler is also a respectable school that along with Male is in the "traditional program." I'd say Manual is the best overall.
I'm a graduate of Male and I will tell you that I had an excellent experience there and it did an excellent job of preparing me for college, not to mention those were some of the best years of my life.
As for private schools Superman mentioned DeSales which would be a fine choice. Among the best are Trinity, St. Xavier, Kentucky Country Day, Assumption and Sacred Heart Academy. There are quite a few other notable ones as well.

well I agree. hopefully its the same if I decide to return in a few years and not overrun with low density sprawl that has ruined every city in america.

My son arrives on Wednesday! He is getting sooooooo...... excited. Hopefully he will find it as welcoming as this thread states it is! His friend has just arrived in Indiana and she is loving it there. Says you're all a pretty friendly bunch but the downside is the meals are too big apparently!
