Great topic I truely remember and miss Shilltoes & Bacon's. I also remember GES....those were the days then. I've been to Toy Tiger a few times, but miss "Troubador" and the place across the street behind them. I forgot that name, but they had foosball (sp) that I played there. Erhler's ice cream was a great place too.

I am originally from Louisville, but I now live in Georgia. I just returned from a trip to Louisville and while I was there, I drove through the old Highland neighborhood - what a great area of Louisville! There are so many neat stores to visit, as well as great restaurants!

Allied Sporting Goods
Bacon's (bought by Dillard's)
Shilito's
Stewart's
Airway (bought by Target)
Lazarus (bought by Macy's)
Levy's
Burger Chef
Burger Queen
Druther's
Toy Tiger
Melrose Inn
The Banquet Table
Red Giraffe
TG&Y
My dad used to bounce at the Toy Tiger before he started working for Bluegrass Cooperage. I actually remeber Bacon's though I think thats the only one on the list. Didn't Dog N' Suds used to be a fast food restraunt?

I was born in Louisville in 1939, and graduated from St X in 1956. I seem to remember the Dizzy Whiz (sp?) being located on the south side of Broadway, between 2nd and 3rd Streets, fifty or so years ago. My grandfather, Louis Philipps, was co-owner of Orthopedic Shoe Repair, next door to the restaurant.

A lot of years ago, there was a Cape Codder on Woodlawn Avenue, just west of Southern Parkway, behind Dawn Donuts; they prepared very good seafood.

There was also a Cape Codder in Okolona on St Rita Drive. It later became Kip's Kove.

Speaking of donuts, does anyone remember a bakery in Louisville called Davis Donuts? One of my fondest childhood memories is the glazed donuts from there. Would have been somewhere from the late 50s to the early 60s.
