3rd Street Road questions
Hi everybody,
I am just finishing up my degree and am very interested in relocating to your city. My church is vital to me, so even before conducting a job search, I have been researching your churches. I found Valley View Church on 3rd Street Road and am very pleased with what I saw (and heard) on their site. What do you hear about Valley View? Is 3rd Street Road a decent part of town? What part of town is it in? I am asking because I spend a fair amount of time at church, and so ideally I would like to live nearby. I am used to things being relatively close, and I am getting old and stuck in my ways LOL. A commute time of 20-25 minutes or less to work/church/home would be great. If the church area is not so great for a living environment, where would be a good place to live that would be an easy commute?
My target places for work is either a law firm or insurance company. Does the 3rd Street Road area offer a business community? I am planning on continuing my education, so how close are the universities? How far of a commute would it be to downtown? I am 40 and single with a puppy so I will want to be around some activity for both of us
Thank you so much for anybody who may decide to help me out.

It's in the south end in or near the Shively area.
I'm not a big fan of that area. Lower middle working class, which is no problem, but there are some definite scary areas around there. My guess is that it's at least a 30 minute commute to downtown, but others here will know better. You won't find too many bigger professional companies in that area.
Edited to add: I'm an east end snob, so take that into consideration.

From what you are saying, I think Auburndale (3rd St@New Cut) would be a fine choice. It's a blue collar area with patches of executive homes. There is plenty of mercantile support with Kroger, Banks, Value Market, and the entire Dixie Hwy of commerce. Security is 8-9 on scale of 10, and Iroquois Park is one of the best Louisville has to offer. Work from UPS/airport to heavy industry within 15 min walk/bus.
U of L is about 2 miles north. Jefferson Community College SW Campus 2 miles to the SW.

Valley View has a good reputation and has had for years. It was the host church for my Boy Scout troop, and I recall going to a revival their when I was in High School.
Agree with Tom Cox about Auburndale. Further away, at the other end of TSR but closer to VV, is Prairie Village, which is a nice older colletion of subdivisions (1950s to maybe the vey early 1970s vintage). There are some newer areas wth larger houses to the north of 3rd Street, too.
Place to avoid is Hidden Valley, directly behind VV. This subdivision of little "235" houses had a bad rep.

I am so appreciative of all your very helpful replies It makes the transition easier. I am a paralegal so please bear with me as I am trained in asking a lot of questions
Missy - I'm glad to know that the church is a good one. The messages that I have heard from the pastor have been fantastic.
Off Topic - Is the East end more popular? If so, why? If I lived on the east side, (or where on the east side) could I get to church in 20-25 minutes?
Tomocox - Thank you for the recommendation. Coming from a realtor that means a lot. Is Auburndale a neighborhood or is it a town? Do you know if the Dixie Highway has any law offices or insurance companies? Thank you for the security information on Auburndale. That is very important as it is just me and puppy coming.
JeffreyT-What is TSR? Thank you about the information on Hidden Valley. I noticed some residental areas behind and to the side of the church and was wondering about it.
Darn it... I have run out of time, I need to get to my online class.....

Auburndale is an area of old Louisville (not OLD Louisville) but if you look at historic maps, Auburndale was a part of Louisville long before WWII.
Yes, there are many insurance and several law offices between I-264 and the Gene Snyder Freeway.

Welcome to Louisville! I moved from the 3rd Street/Auburndale area due to the undesirables in the area. VV is a good church from what I've heard, but I'm not a church goer, and have no personal opinion of the church itself. The area...imagine this:
People who have limited access to vehicles travel either by foot or bus. They tend to take the grocery cart home with them and leave it to rust wherever they stop. Drugs are a problem in the area. Ignorant rednecks are prevalent in the area.
As for Prairie Village-bunch of pill pushers in that area, but hey, if you don't have children and aren't much for wanting to know your neighbors, might not be too bad.
The east end is lower in crime (not void of it-alot of domestic violence, drugs as well and gangs-yes gangs) but not as much as the south or west end. It's also higher in prices for housing and shopping. They have a LARGE, VERY LARGE (so large, alot of folks here call it: "Six Flags Over Jesus" because the parking lot is bigger than that of Six Flags here in Louisville) I kid you not! anyway, the community for that church is apparently very strong, albeit very big. They hold several services a day.
Housing the area of the church is reasonably priced in Middletown and St. Matthews.
GOOD LUCK!!!

Wyoming Bound, I don't know which part of 3rd/Auburndale you lived in, but on this thread and another thread you seem to have a real issue with the area which leads me to believe the issue may have been your involvement in the community. I am not putting you down, but rather suggesting that your anger, for whatever reason, has disparaged an entire area of good people. Are there flaws in the area, you bet, but the slams you have made are just not true. Up in the area near the Iroquois Homes, I think you can make a point, but not Auburndale/Arnoldtown Road/Kenworth hill area. There are some mighty fine people that I personally know off New Cut and Gagel Ave.
Please do not put a community of people down because of your own frustrations.

i went to valley view church for some time. i really enjoyed it. it's a great non denominational church. the sermons are great and they are very applicable to reality. there is also a great ministry for high school and younger aged kids.
