If you have not heard of these gangs, search MySpace for "Badd News Louisville" or "Doom Squad Louisville" or "Victory Park Louisville" or "Shepherd Square Louisville" and look at the people's pics that they have....you will find alot of kids and younger adults throwing up Bloods or whatever other gang sign they use. This is especially true for those in Badd News and around Victory Park and the Doom Squad.

It amazes me that are bloods on westport rd.... I am new in town , but Westport rd. seems so sleepy and middle class. One: they must be like the guys on the movie White Boyz or two: They are some drunk U of L fans fighting UK fans and mistaken for bloods and crips ....

Speaking from a perfect perspective and the God's Honest Truth!
Louisville used to be a safe City, and in fact for many years was renown for being one the most welcoming cities if not "THE" most for folks from any state to come and work, raise a family, or even loaf your way in perfect safety if that was your chosen idea of living.
NOT ANYMORE!
And "DO NOT"! believe a single lying word from it's long, very long time, grossly underestimated and overrated Mayor Jerry Abramson about how Louisville is a good place to live. Violence is way out-of-control and it's infested like never before in it's history. I bet the Civil War was never this bad as it's become now. Yep, i grew up there, worked there, and as recently as 1998 (10 years ago), it had reached a point of hostility never before experienced in it's former rich history.
I have a personal stake in Louisville as a long time native and WAS my home for most my life untill the dark evil of violence invaded it and have even overwhelmed all the local authorities, and now exact only a heavy toll of killing for years.
How do i know? Because i been monitoring it's news cast daily for 5 years now safely tucked away miles from this human demolition.
So if you value your life and safety at all and don't wish to be a part of this new heritage statistics, stay away from Louisville Ky as a place to live as though a Nuclear Radiation Fallout had impacted it, because it's violence is just as lethal and the danger is very real and not likely for many generations to recover what it's been shaped into now, if ever.
So sad, but so real. Portland was my neighborhood (home), a good and decent area for years where even walking at night was FUN and enjoyable to drum up conversation with neighbors at any time all night long.
Now you couldn't pay me enough to even drive in the daylight there unless escorted by the Military Police or National Guard. The savages have fully taken control, and they intend to keep it as a legacy to their own ruinous heritage.
Judgement is already begun and will continue too. LoL

Joseph,
How bad is Portland in comparison to the west end of Louisville? I haven't been to Portland yet, but I have a hard time believing that you are scared to drive through Portland during the day. Louisville might be worse than it used to be, but it is not Los Angeles or Chicago or Memphis or St. Louis. The crime rate and murder rate in Louisville is low in comparison to those cities. St. Louis is almost half the population of Louisville, and there are a lot more gangs in St. Louis.
Something needs to be done in Louisville about crime and violence, but I would rather run around naked in the worst part of Louisville than get caught up in the wrong place during the day in any of the cities I mentioned above.

Greetings natewood3
Just to clarify things better, Portland actually for years was considered part of the overall area known as the WEST END. That is approaching west from downtown on Main Street roughly at the old railroad overpass at around 13th street all the way to the Ohio River banks at old Shawnee Park, ending if i remember correctly about 44th street or so, maybe 42nd at the old grounds where used to stand the amusement park Fontaine Ferry Park.
Approaching north from south, say Broadway all the way to (again) the Ohio River banks at the old McAlpine Locks & Dam, all this encompassed what was and i guess still is known as the West End!
Portland came about because it was simply a historic port neighborhood with some pretty old & odd history as being a stopping point for the shipping route boats way back when. The odd part is, (check out the Portland Museum on Portland Ave) there was a renown fellow of the old days who made a name for himself in the area because he was considered a rarity for those times; a giant, i believe it was claimed he was nearly 8 foot tall.
Many tree lines streets used to grace the entire area with beautiful stately Oaks, Walnut, etc trees and roll after roll of closely built wooden cottages. It was a purely blue collar working class neighborhood with a wide diverse heritage of German's, Dutch, Irish, and so forth in my early boyhood days. On every single block was either dry good stores, 5 & dime stores, grocery stores, various shops etc. On Market Street were classic jewelry stores, movie theatres, dept stores, you name it, it had it all in it's day. City Swimming Pools, many wonderfully built Catholic Churches as well as Luthern, Protestant, Baptists, etc. City bus routes used to run almost every hour on the hour 7 days a week, cab services (Yellow & Checker come to mind), and the list goes on.
In all that, and the big population of the West End then, you could safely walk at night anyplace and all night long anytime, and the Police always kept order and even for a time used to even walk beats.
How times change, and seemingly always for the worse instead of better.
Back OT, it sickens me how that section of the City is been allowed to grossly decay to the point where it is now.
I recently walked around in downtown Detroit many times and not just felt safe but WAS safe in comparison to Louisville now. As far as those other Cities you mentioned, those are Metropolis's, vastly larger then Louisville ever could be so they really are no true measurement in comparison when it comes to crime and danger.

If you ran naked (or dressed LoL) in the worst part of Louisville, i would still hope you was alert & well armed because by the time help would arrive if attacked, the perpetrators would long since dashed off into their dark cover.
I hate referring negatively to a City and Neighborhood which used to be my home, but sadly it's been allowed to regress so terribly that it's now infested with drugs, gangs, or other wannabe groups, and the violence is unmistakeable and unrelenting.
I never thought in Louisville i would ever hear the day someone would take the life of a small child and toss their body in a Garbage Truck? Read all about it, that and the years of senseless violence seem to have no end.
I find all that totally appalling and terribly shocking to say the least, and to think that the current (long time, too long) Mayor has the gall to try to promote Louisville as a safe city to live & work in?
Beats me, i'm just thankful & feel somewhat fortunate that i finally left there with my life, but not without some scars
All i can add to what you already said of " Something needs to be done in Louisville about crime and violence" is many current residents have felt that way for years now, and many finally wised up or just gave up and left while others have been content to stick it out.
Terrible saga there for years now that continue and may never change.

So, what is the truth about crime in Louisville? My husband and made a trip to Louisville about 2 months ago and was driving around about 8:30 at night down town and there were families on their bikes on the city sidewalks plus women pushing baby carriages this late. So, tell me, will you get mugged or murdered downtown like in Memphis or St. Louis? I am hearing 2 sides to the story.
We were considering relocating here but now are not sure.
Debbie

Debbie and Nate,
I feel sorry for you if you are hanging on ANY word written by Joseph. I'm not even responding to his drivel because, to someone like him, it is pointless. There are no facts to back up his position. And, I doubt the use of facts would change his tune. For whatever reason, he has an axe to grind.
I've lived in Louisville my entire life, sans a few year stint in college and in Nashville. I have never been a victim of any crime in Louisville. NEVER. Over 3 decades and not once. And, I do not hide in the suburbs. I live in the Highlands and work downtown.
I'm sorry you are hearing two sides to the story. But, for one, I wouldn't take an internet message board for fact. The best thing you can do is go to the city and experience it. Debbie, I believe you had. I would trust your eyes over those of someone who would anonymously spit such venom. Then, I would use statistics and data to corroborate what you observed.
Is there crime in Louisville? Yes. But, although one crime is too many, your options are to truly pick the lesser of comparative evils. If you look at the surround competitor cities (Indy, Nashville, Birmingham, St. Louis and Cincinnati), Louisville has less crime (statistically) than any of them. Further, reknown crime centers (DETROIT, Altanta, Memphis, and New Orleans) do not even compare to Louisville.
Please understand there is an ulterior motive to Joseph's posts (evidenced by him saying Detroit is a safer city...Kabul, Afghanistan has less violence than Detroit). Experience Louisville for yourself and then decide.
