Hi natewood3,
I smell some sarcasm coming from mrkool's post--but I wouldn't say it's malicious; perhaps he's just trying to add some levity...?
Well, in defining where to start--do you mean like locality, or demographically? Locality, I would have to give that more consideration--but the
general concensus is West End/Downtown/South/Southwest are the troubled areas. Demographically--I think it's great that you are working with young but mature people--who will be the leaders in charge of the future--to steer them in the right directions. There is a lot of mistaken assumptions that kids who are dabbling in trouble
now are just destined for the State Penn in the future.
And that's the key--they have to
want to.
Most kids who get into trouble, are really bored with nothing positive to focus on (lets face it, a lot of kids don't have a lot of positives in their lives; some are just "lost" and looking for something but not knowing what it is they are necessarily looking
for. They just lose their way. They need a map and good sound directions, in a matter of speaking, just like any person who's lost and in an area that can be uncertain. and then there are some kids who just fall into trouble at every turn without meaning to. The rest go looking for trouble to find trouble.
But I think that
anyone can turn over a new leaf
any time they want to, and that as long as someone is willing to hold out hope, that there is no such thing as a lost cause. It only takes one bright spark to start a fire you know.
I'm looking at doing some volunteer work where I am living now, with the local indiginous communities; every town, city and country have places that can use a helping hand; charity begins at home, and home is whatever you define it. At any rate, every journey begins with one small step!
Boy I'm just full of clichés tonight!
good luck with your project and do keep us posted! I may live in Austrlia, but I still love Louisville!
Cheers!
