Moving to Fort Knox Area: Hodgenville vs Breckenridge County
Within the next two years we will be moving to the Fort Knox area from the DC metropolitan area. We love the rural, quiet life and hope to purchase at least five or ten acres and not be in a subdivision. We've been told that Breckenridge County and the area around Hodgenville are places we might like. Is there any industrial growth expected in Breckenridge? Since Breckenridge does not have zoning laws, has this presented many problems, such as properties not being kept up, etc? Do Breckenridge and Hodgenville have county water or well water? If well water is available, is it good water? What is the average depth of wells in the area? And how reliable are the electric co-ops serving these areas? Are there numerous power outages for no reason at all? What is their reliability factor during ice storms? Would it be advisable to purchase a generator?
Thank you for any information you can give us.

I can only speak to Breckenridge county. The drive from either place will be over 30 minutes and I know from DC that is a breath of fresh air but locals will think that's a long drive to Ft Knox. Breckenridge does have county water in limited spots but most use wells. The well water in most places, especially Breckenridge is the best in the country. Average depth is 200-250 feet. Well costs for new homes are around $10k. The electric co-ops (Meade co RECC) is top notch with prices that the rest of the country envies. Ice storms do occur but are less fequent than in DC. Ice storms that take down lines do not occur every year.
Unsure about the industrial growth for B'ridge county and Hardinsburg would seem the likely location if it does move in. Meade county is plenty rural for most people and is a lot closer. You can find 5 to 10 acre lots with or without homes in western Meade county and still be rural yet closer to Knox. With zero (none, nada) zoning in either county, I would suggest searching for a neighborhood where every house lot is 5 to 10 acres and has the zoning requirements that you desire. You'll see lots of nice houses on big lots next to lots that need improving. Small neighborhoods (10-30 homes) with 5-10 acre lots are somewhat common in Meade common and less common in Breckenridge.
Growth simply doesn't occur at the speed of DC or other metro areas. It is unlikely that undeveloped land in B'ridge county will be developed within 5 years as it likely would if you were in DC. This may change with the inbound residents of Knox but I wouldn't expect the speed of growth that you are probably have seen. It seems to take years for a new, small strip mall to be completed and then leased where it takes a couple of months for this to occur in a 2+million city. Flights from DC are cheap and it makes sense for everyone who is planning on moving to take a weekend trip to Ft Knox.

Actually if you are moving with BRAC you may want to google OneKnox. They have a lot of information. Someone in my mom's command chartered a trip out to Knox last month. That would be the best way to check out Knox and surrounding in my view.

Actually, even w/ the influx of new residents from the DC metro, I don't see B'ridge Co. becoming even an exurban county of Louisville and Ft. Knox. It will continue to remain a rural county with strong ties to L/FK (make sense?) It's just it's so rural in nature that the Wal-Mart in Hardinsburg is 25 years old, less than 40,000 sq. ft, and still the county hangout.
Breckinridge, and for that matter Meade and Grayson Counties, will remain rural in character for decades to come.
