As a Vet Tech I can say that not only is it important to find a reputable vet you can trust and form a good relationship with. But the aftercare is very important. The debate amongst dog owners is based upon personal opinion. Even vets have those. Everything bred into a specific breed of dog IS cosmetic. Some were altered by our own hand when it could not be genetically changed. As a rule there are certain breeds no longer used for the purpose for which they were created. But, we still want the physical characteristics to be retained. The same people who are appalled by docking and cropping will think nothing of putting braces on their child (a painful extended procedure) or having a breast augmentation themselves. It comes down to the owners choice.(The AKC as a rule no longer requires and often denies docking or cropping to show) There are many things illegal in some countries that aren't in others. Find a vet who has a nice sized clinic and ask how long they've been in practice. Your local Petsmart or pet store will also happily advise you. Ask a neighbor. Most vets are reputable and do fine work. Ask how they feel about these procedures as well as how often they do it. Good luck.

i breed and show boxers. i had my dogs ears cropped at dr.selby's office address is 2921 7th street in louisville phone is 502 637-7711. he did show crop on my dogs ears and they were only bandaged for two weeks and he did not bother them at all i don't really think he knew anything was done. he never acted like he had anything done to him. i am also a vet tech. and i believe in declawing and cropping of ears. there are plenty of vets that do it still

Default ears

I don't think everyone has too much room to talk because getting your dogs ears done is something similar to you going and having your ear pearced. It is a little sore at first maybe a week then it takes several weeks to completely heal. Right? So it isn't much difference to take your dog to the vet, have him/ her put to sleep and then shape the ears. It hurts for about a week and it takes a couple of weeks to completely heal then poof its done and over. I just had my dobies done at thirteen weeks old and he doesn't love me any less over it.

Default It is your choice don

I think that if you want to get your dog's ears cropped then you should..it is YOUR dog!! My husband and I have a three year male boxer that has his cropped...it is not as painful for them as people make out. He was up and acting like his normal playful self the very next day after the procedure...it took only about four weeks for them to be completely healed and standing on their own. He has tall cropped ears as the showing type too!! You definitely need to make sure that you go somewhere that knows what they are doing and that you are ready to take care of the ear like you are suppose to. If you are not going to make sure that they are always clean, bandaged the right way, or held up with support while healing then you shouldn't get this done.

How can the majority of you say that this is cruel and soooo painful?? Have you personally had it done?? I think that some should stop and realize that not everyone does it out of being mean or trying to be cruel.
