Suicidal after apartment search in louisville!
My wife and I flew down to Louisville this past week-end (October 17th) to find an apartment for her while I try to sell our home in Milwaukee. After a fruitless and frustrating two days, we are both regretting the decision she made to accept a position at the University of Louisville Medical School!
We are willing to spend a thousand dollars a month and are interested in either Downtown or the Highlands. My wife is fifty years old and will have a small dog with her (That is not me!) We looked at the Henry Clay (overpriced and in a sketchy neighborhood), a two bedroom on Cherokee Road, (disgusting at best!) a small house a bit off of Baxter, somewhat south of the main Highlands, (I can only describe it as grotesque!) another condo downtown that was in poor shape and over priced. We finally relented and drove to a development in St. Matthews that looked liked something out of "The Stepford Wives." Everything was incredibly generic! We felt that Old Louisville would be "sketchy" for my wife at night.
What should we do? We had a fairly pleasant week-end outside of the apartment disaster. The meal at Pat's Steakhouse was disappointing, but the dinner at Jack Fry's was excellent. Proof is a great bar downtown, but we found our walk up Bardstown Road after dinner at Frys disappointing. The bars were empty at 10:00 P.M. on a Saturday night! Only the Irish spots on Baxter had any people in them. I also had a great time at a blues club named Zenas, I think, on Main Street, which was the perfect dive with great music. Unfortunately, I think it is closing. I almost asked the owner if I could buy it! We did enjoy our stay at the 21C Hotel.
Do any of you have some further suggestions? We are at a loss.
Thanks.

Tell us more about your criteria. Does she need public transportation to and from work? What about house vs apartment? There is a band of as you say "sketchy" blocks that isolate UL Med from most non-sketchy residential areas of Louisville inside the Watterson (I-264). This would in my opinion preclude walking, biking to work at the Med Center unless you choose a true downtown abode.

Particulars:
She will have her car and is rather independent. The unfurnished unit may be a one bedroom or a two bedroom, and since we do have a rather modern, California style home in Milwaukee, she is used to a clean, minimalist look. However, at this point, we are not too particular. We would like something clean, with parking, air-conditioned, in a neighborhood with good shopping, restaurants etc. That is why we concentrated on Downtown and the Highlands. We may have to spend more then $1000.00, but our top expenditure would be around $1200.00. As I mentioned, she will have our small Coton de Tulier named Tizi.
Any help you can provide would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Contact a gentleman by the name of Matt who has some condos that are available for rent. The addresses are on Everett Avenue and Eastern Parkway. They are immaculate units and have all new kitchens and baths with granite, etc. I don't know the prices as they were for sale before. 502-553-5293

Thank you!
You have been extremely helpful. We have spoken to Matt, and he has created a viable option for my wife.
