Well, this is how things change. Shelby Park is already changing because of young educated families moving in, both white and black and every other race. The same can be said of the northern reaches of germantown.

I once met a white hippie guy at a coffee shop in the Highlands who rode his bike there from 15th and Muhammad Ali, where he lived. Said he was the only white guy on his block but no one gave him problems. He doesnt do drugs and has never had any problem with break ins, although he did say he occasionally hears gunshots at night.

Well that's the thing. If you have several middle classs folks moving into a depressed area, then it changes the existing balance because there is strength in numbers, and therefore the crime usually moves or at least there is a hope it will. Many people call this "taking back the neighborhood." However, as a rule, you don't see this sort of influx all at once. It's like a slow drip, if it happens at all.

The difference is being the only Young Professional in an area verse being part of a growing trend.

East Broadway is a pretty dicey area, yet it is clearly an improving area with new developments ongoing and planned. It's an area the will clearly be better in 10 years than it is now.

By contrast there is no reason at all to believe that you could move to Bank Street or Greenwood Ave and expect things to get any better any time in the future. The threat of violence is so high there that no one in their right mind would open a coffee shop or any other business there

Are you so sure? There is an amazing coffeehouse that keeps Bardstown Road hours on West Muhammad Ali in Russell.

What I find is people really don't know the West End like they think. I sure don't. There may be other places like this. This is one I happen to go to sometimes because I enjoy the poetry and diversity.

Also, East Broadway is only dicey because of the Shepphard Square projects one block south of Broadway around Clay and Hancock. Really the areas east of 9th street, north of broadway is safe all the way east to the Original Highlands, Butchertown, and Clifton. These area all areas that have gentrified in the last 10 years, including most of Phoenix Hill centered around the Liberty Green development.

So if my wife and I moved in a house somewhere by Victory Park, would we be ostracized and picked on and have our house and/or cars broken into or would we just be looked at as strange for moving into that part of the city?

That may be different, as that area is very dangerous. The west end in general is dangerous, but there is very bad pockets, and that has been one for years from what I have read. From what I understand that is where gang territories collide. However, areas near Shawnee Park on the river around Southwestern Parkway have homes in wonderful shape that are actually pretty safe. The street itself looks like Eastern Parkway (of course! it was designed by Olmstead).

There have been 7 murders this year right on West Broadway at the following intersections. Btw 28th Street and 22nd Street there was literally a murder every other intersection this year

This is the second year in a row where Louisville had approached 80 homicides. A few years ago 55 was a bad year. I hope this is a trend that ends in 2009

Of course but crime and murders don't even belong in the same sentence though. Geez...

All this talk of money coming back in, progress and things getting better all the while lou murders are up and all you are doing is like colbot said the crime moves away when this happens.

To where? Taylor blvd, shively, pockets here and there in okolona, j town. How is that benifiting the city as a whole? Ah i see its about the downtown, not the burbs. Plain and simple. Its a constant battle to shift the poor black masses out of site and out of mind. How about some no BS crime prevention? More cops in high crime areas? Profiling works...do it. Stuff like this will benifit everyone.

Its funny how you downtown guys hate the suburb sprawl but when it comes down to improving downtown your all for it. lol! MOVE EM OUT!! The west end should be under stadium lights and marshal law with curfews. If i lived there i would be all for it. But id sleep in my car before i would live there, it would be nicer.

The more and more i think of this the more sickened i get. You guys have some hellafied blinders ill give you that.

We have a lot of 3-4 guy hearsay myspace gang activity. Nothing organized like in LA. But murders are murders and these do look like hits. Id take that federal money and put a national guardsman at every corner along broadway from 9th all the way to the river.

Maybe obama will turn out to be the dictator we prolly need he is the one pushing for a well funded civilian militia.
