Family living in L'ville
Our family may be moving to Louisville in the next 6 mos where he'd be at the U of L. I love old homes w/porches and trees, but want a safe and family friendly neighborhood as well. My husband leans towards a place with 1 acre or more. Can someone suggest areas that we could explore further? We can afford something in the $200-250K range. What is the commute like if you live outside of town? Are there any routes that are better than others?
Thanks

The one acre requirement with old homes porches and old trees at 200-250 will offer fewer opportunities within a decent commute to UofL. I live in Briar Hill which sits just east of I-265 at KY 22. Our home is on 1.1 acres, but is a 1970's model without the porch. If we were to place our home on the market we would reasonably expect to sell for between $ 230 & 250,000.
Oldham County is a great place to raise a kid. Best public schools in the state, very low crime, convenient to most everything (I-71 runs up the center of the county with exits 14, 17, 18, 22, & 28 miles from I-65 in downtown Louisville), shopping is reasonable with Kroger, Costco, Meijer's, and a great little independent in Crestwood for groceries. I like living here, and there are plenty of homes as you specify, but because of the era of homes, few have that lovely front porch.

There are lots of safe historic areas with 15 minutes of U of L within that price, but not with that much land. La Grange has quite a few Victorian homes with large yards, TO would know more about their prices than me
Louisville traffic is a breeze compared to most places. You could get from Oldham Co to either the Belknap or Med campus in 20 minutes even in rush hour. There are slight backups at I-265/264 sometimes, but nothing major. It takes 5 minutes to get through a red light here in Lexington

Oh come on census, you and your exaggerations. La Grange is nearly 40 miles to UofL's Belknap campus, so it is a MINIMUM of 30 minutes each way. With traffic, you could push over 50 minutes, and that assumes you live by the freeway in LaGrange.
Also, if you can find a stop light in Lexington that lasts five minutes, record it, and I will pay you.

yeah its DEFINITELY more than 20 minutes to U of L from anywhere in La Grange. It takes me almost 30 minutes and I live in Middletown.

Thanks for all the comments. I have another question. How about Shelby or Spencer counties? What's the commute like from there? 30 min is OK. Much more and it's probably no. Also, completly different subject. I found a Swim Club called Lakewood. It looks like so much fun! Can anyone join? Or do you have to be from a certain area. My kids LOVE swimming. And I'm thinking it might be worth it to have a smaller yard to be near this club.

We're new here and love it. There are nice older homes all over parts of J-county but I don't know that you'll find any on an acre of ground. On the other hand there are lots of nice newer homes in Oldham Co. that are located on 1 acre+ lots. The commute from La Grange to downtown L'ville is about 25 min. on a good day. Talk to Tomocox, he's the man.

Moderator cut: personal - off topicFrom I-71 exit 22, (or 22 miles from the intersection of I-65, I-64, & I-71) that means it is 18 miles from the Kennedy Bridge to the UL Belknap Campus (for those who might not know, the main UL campus with Papa John's Stadium). I would advise you not to disparage Oldham County again.

Just for STX I did time several traffic signals in Lexington with my cell phone's stop watch.
The red light to cross Man O War on Clays Mill Rd is 1 minute 40 seconds
To get on to Clays Mill south from Stone Rd took 3 minutes 33 seconds and 2 light cycles
To get from Stone Rd through the traffic signal at Wellington Way took 2 minutes 55 seconds and 2 light cycles
