"" This Saturday, March 7, the History Committee of the Southwest Dream Team will be welcoming residents for a "Scanning Extravaganza" to aid in the production of a history book on Southwest Louisville from 9am to 2pm. You may bring your old pictures of people, places or buildings in Southwest Louisville to the Farnsley-Moreman Landing for consideration for inclusion. We will carefully scan your pictures and return them immediately. There will be light refreshments and discounted tours of the House if you wish to partake. I will also be conducting light interviews with residents that wish to share stories.

This is a great opportunity for us to share our history and help educate others, while helping a good cause. The committee hopes to have the history book completed by the end of the year. It is a massive undertaking, and your help is needed and greatly appreciated.

I want to buy this book when it comes out! Oh, I so hope someone brought pictures to scan of my area. There was a house on the corner near me, next to Jiggs' Market, that supposedly served as a civil war era hospital- it was torn down before I was born, but my uncle used to take his metal detector over there (with Mr. Jiggs' permission) and turn up buttons and bullets. I'd love to see what that house actually looked like. And at the other end of Torrington is a house I've loved for years- an old farmhouse on Rayburn. The foundations supposedly date back to the early 1800s; it'd be wonderful to see what that house has looked like in the past. When my grandparents built this house, there were farms all around- I'd love to see what that looked like. It's so built up and busy now, it's hard to envision cows in the next yard.

If this is the house I'm thinking about it was the old Jones place. I recall it still standing during the 1970s, it was a long place with clapboard siding and in a state of progressive collapse. Not sure if it was log underneath.

The house on Torrington (west of Deering Road?) was the Finley place, if this is the one Im thinking about. I recall it sat on a little rise.

One way to get a feel of the countryside is to take a gander at the old aeriel photos at the Soil Conservation Survey office off Bardstown Road in Fern Creek. They have overflights going back to the late 1930s. Back then Valley Station looked (from the air) like a little crossroads village. But it was already suburban. People were already building out there, but along the country roads. There are a few of these places left, bungalow style, maybe revival styles, from the 1920s, 30s, & 40s.

I wish I had taken more pix of Valley Station back in the 1970s when some of this was still standing, particularly that old long storefront building by the railroad tracks, on the north side of Valley Station Rd.

Fortunatly the old Valley School building still stands.
