We chose Mt Washington over New Albany just to avoid dealing with the bridge in our commute. All it takes is one accident off 64 or 65 in Indiana and you can double your commute in the morning. If you look off Bardstown Rd right around the Bullitt/Jefferson Co line, it's a much nicer area in my opinion. Lots of new developments, some of which are more upscale. We've been in the area for a little over a year and really like it - 45 minute commute tops for me to go to my job at the VA hospital which is pretty close to downtown and I don't use the interstates. Couldn't tell you about schools as we don't have kids in school, but as far as drugs go Bullitt Co in general has a bad rep but most of what I hear is it comes from Shep or Lebanon Junction. No worse than the areas right around New Albany.

You hit the nail on the head. Thank you. I agree, if children are not an issue, Mt. Washington might fit nicely in most people's model; however, as a professional Realtor, I am mandated to take all the buyer's criteria into consideration. I can sell a home anywhere in Kentucky (yes that does include Jefferson County), or all of Indiana. Why would I push Oldham County? Only when there are children involved do I push OC. It is just that much better of a place to raise a kid. It's not just education either. It's extracurricular, it's quality of life for everyone. Yes, there is crime in OC. My step-son is an assistant to the county jailer. Yes, there is some meth here, too. It's quite simply however, a matter of how much. With the combined efforts of the Oldham County Sheriff's office, the Oldham County Police Dept, the Kentucky State Police, and the LaGrange and Pewee Valley Police Departments, most drug and nearly all alcohol related crime is held at levels far below the area per-capita.

Depends on which part of Jefferson County you're talking about. I'll take Prospect and Anchorage over OC any day. Honestly, most anything north of 64 and east of the Snyder is on par with OC. Everyone hypes OC schools so much compared to JCPS, but the discrepency is not that great when you start limiting the sample to the area I mentioned. Plus, I've heard from friends in the OCPS system that the discrepency is lessening even more as the exodus to OC continues. In addition, much of the charm that drew people to OC is going away as developments continue popping up. OC is quickly becoming a suburb of Louisville.

Mbrindle,
How long of a commute does it take you to get to say U of L or Norton Hospital in downtown Louisville from Mt. Washington?

Maybe 5 minutes longer the way I go - it's only three miles farther from the VA. 65 might be a little faster to get downtown, but I don't think it's worth the time savings. I avoid it like the plague because of how often there are accidents that snarl traffic. There is also an express bus line that runs from Mt Washington, so that's another transportation option.
If you want some information on the area, you can direct message me.

"you guys and you all"? You're not from around here are you?

I disagree with the "you all" versus "y'all" thing. Tomocox doesn't cross the bridge nearly as much as I do, living downtown. I can tell you that southern Indiana has more in common with Louisville suburbs like Jeffersontown or even Oldham County or Shelby County than it does with the city neighborhoods of Louisville like the Highlands. Many people in the downtown areas won't say "y'all" either. I don't say it. I am raised northern, and y'all just sounds ignorant to me. At the same time, many transplants or even natives won't say "y'all" in Louisville. It just depends, and it is mixed in this mixed Midwest/Southern city.

I don't personally say "you guys" but alot of people do. However, I have heard this alot even in Tennessee! I think it is becoming universal because of the media. I say y'all because that is what I have always said. You guys is unnatural for me. Heck, it is common enough around here that my public speaking teacher in college would take off points for using it in a speech.
