Default New Albany versus Mount Washington

Hi everyone!

I am looking for some advice. We will be relocating to Louisville at the end of the year. We really want to be as close to U of L and the major hospitals as possible since my husband and I are both in the healthcare field. We are looking into New Albany, IN and Mount Washington, KY. Any advice or information about the two cities. What about the school systems? We have a 3 year old son. I am looking into those two cities because they seem like smaller communities but yet closer to the city without actually being in the city and I am afraid of crime in downtown Louisville. Any advice and/or opinions would be fabulous. Thanks!

They are both nice but New Albany will be much closer to the hospitals downtown. Where are you moving from?

We are moving from Maine. My hubby is originally from Louisville. I am so torn...both places look so nice. I definately want to be in a smaller community.

Mt Washington is definetly more of a small town. Its further out but you wouldn't be 10-15 minutes from Gene Snyder Freeway. It would take you to I64 then right into Downtown.

New Albany is not a smaller town. It is actually a piece of a three town pie. New Albany, Clarksville, and Jeffersonville all are one metropolis with the same headaches Louisville has regarding traffic, crime, and housing. Mt. Washington has some serious issues with it's school system, crime, and unless you live in the perfect spot, traffic.

Nope. New Albany is a suburb of Louisville, just like Oldham County. It is safe almost all over, and the homes are much cheaper than on the KY side. New Albany Floyd County has a similar population, crime rate, and feel, as Oldham County. The school systems are also very similar, and New Albany is much more convenient to shopping and downtown.

Mt Washington riddled with crime and traffic? Now Tom, you are just going overboard with gross exaggerations here. The only crime in Mount Washington is associated with meth labs that exist in every exurban Louisville county (and parts of SW Louisville too), including Oldham.

Louisville has some issues with crime and traffic, like any large city, but its a wonderful and more diverse place to live. But remember, New Albany, Oldham, Mount Washington, and every county surrounding Jefferson is in one way a bedroom or exurban community to Louisville; they wouldnt be there if it werent for Louisville.

Per the AP just this morning, The Kentucky State Police estimate that over 1/3 of all of Kentucky's methamphetamine comes from Jefferson and "Bullitt" Counties. Mt. Washington is in Bullitt County. One only has to watch the evening news to see the drug related crime that has become so pervasive in Bullitt Co.

STX, New Albany, Clarksville, & Jeffersonville are suburbs of Louisville, no doubt, but they are in Indiana with different laws, regulations, and they even say "you guys" over there while "you all" (not y'all) is more of the Louisville and Kentucky style.

How much comes from Mt. Washington versus Lebanon Junction, Shepherdsville, etc.?

I like New Albany, but that's me. I think you get the best of both worlds by living there and working in Louisville.

You have raised a very good point. I agree, but then where's the line?
