Nice areas of louisville
Ok, so I've been looking for a long time for somewhere to settle and Louisville has always interested me. I've never been but the culture, geography and price all seem to keep me interested. Here's what I'm interested in...I'm a married 24 year old with a one year old daughter. I'm interested in a safe suburban area that is not completely lilly white(i'm white my wife is jamaican). I'm interested in whether the pay in Louisville is comperable to the cost of living, here in Utah it's much lower. I've lived in CA, PDX, PHX, UT, and the Chicago suburbs and am interested in something similar to the latter. I loved the midwestern hospitality and culture (i like Indy too but I'm interested in something more "southern" if you know what I mean) and it seems that kenucky just adds onto that. I'm currently a junior in college and will look to move upon graduation. I'm majoring in finance, how's the economy in louisville? anyway, I hope i've been specific enough with what I want to know. We just basically want to live in a fun city in a safe neighborhood and be able to afford a house in a few years.

Coming from the chi burbs and relocating to l-ville shortly... its probably exactly what your looking for. More southern than chicago, but not absolutely southern... happy medium.
The job market seems pretty good, I'd give online job postings a look and see whats out there. I can't directly comment as I'm moving with an online business... and intend to grab up a basic part time job, which there are plenty of just about anywhere you go.
Houses are relatively cheap, and although I havent been through the western "bad" part of louisville, I've at least driven through much of the rest. I can't say anywhere felt at all unsafe... but I also have dealings with various bad parts of chicago and am "used" to it.

Look at Semonin.com - do a subdivision, area or map search. We like Pewee Valley, Goshen, Crestwood, Prospect, Indian Hills, St. Matthews, La Grange

In general, the "bad areas" of Louisville are west of 9th street. There are a few exceptions, but this is a pretty good rule in general. Even in that area, I wouldn't be scared to drive through or something during the day like I was in some parts of Chicago's west side where it looked like a bomb went off. There is even a Fortune 1000 company, Brown Forman (owners of Jack Daniel's Whiskey), in this part of town.
For the gentleman looking to move, please give me the suburb where you currently live in Chicago and I can try to match you with a "similar" one here in Louisville. Louisville is not a hot bed for finance jobs, but neither are most cities outside the top 10 largest. Please let me know what jobs you are specifically interested in. Otherwise, our economy is quite robust and healthy, especially in logistics, distribution, and health care (the strengths of the city's economy).

Hi,
I've lived in Louisville for 10 years and now live in Florida. I miss KY and nice people that live there ). The nices parts of Louisville are Prospect, St. Mathews and LaGrange. My parents live in Prospect and it is a nice neighborhood.
Good luck with your move!

One more to the list...
I would add Anchorage to the list of Louisville's "best" areas

I currently live in Louisville, and the suburbs mentioned so far are all good picks but a few are a bit pricey. St Matthews, Middletown, Jeffersontown and Fern Creek are all pretty quiet and houses are all fairly inexpensive.
In general, the eastern parts of the county are considered the nicest.

Several of the posts to your question mentioned a lot of the area's I just got back from. I loved La Grange, Goshen, Crestwood, Pee Wee Valley [don't know if I could tell friends I live in Pee Wee Valley, Kentucky though!], Prospect, and River Bluff. All are gorgeous and offer rural but very kept country feel, yet still very close to the big city when you want it. With the excellent schools Oldham County School District offers [best in state] it would be a excellent place to raise your little one. I have two girls 5 & 9 and that is a BIG reason we are looking at Oldham County. Check out the pictures I just posted to see what the area looks like. Good luck.
