Spanish population?
Hi all,
I'm wondering if there is an area in L'ville and surrounding (IN as well) that has more than average Spanish-speakers. I read on one post that Shelbyville does? Is that true, and any other areas (especially rural)? What about schools with dual immersion English/Spanish?
Thanks for replying, but please don't use this thread to lament the woes of having illegal immigrants. (and no, I'm not one, US cit born and raised =)

Hi Katherine,
Well, I've worked with a few Spanish speaking people through the years (about 8 that I can think of without pausing, all spoke English as a second language..), so I'd say the Hispanic population in Louisville is of reasonable size. A few of them lived in the areas surrounding Southside Drive, and one family lived in Portland. I can't say that the Hispanic population is centered in any one area though.
Can anyone else assist Katherine?
Cheers!

Shelbyville is a hot bed. So is Clarksville, IN, especially along Blackiston Mill Rd. and streets off eastern boulevard.
In LOuisville, Okolona is a massive concentration. This is mostly along preston highway between Grade lane and Outer Loop, with many apartment complexes highly Hispanic.
There is also another large pocket along southside drive and the churchill downs area.

Quite a few JCPS schools offer foreign language programs, usually either Spanish or French or both, also I believe some offer ESL. I do know that Hawthorne Elementary offers a Spanish immersion program, its off of Bardstown Rd area near the Watterson/I-264.
STX pretty much covered the main Hispanic areas, I'd say that the Okolona area along Preston Hwy is the biggest hotbed (especially between Outer Loop and Fern Valley).
