I recently visited Louisville (possibly relocation in the next year because of job), and noticed that all over the Bardstown Rd* area there were check-cashing businesses - at one point it seemed like there was one on every corner. I'm not used to seeing such places so predominantly, as I associate them with payday loans and "seedier" areas. Is the perception I have out of place? And why are there so many check-cashing businesses in Louisville?

(Bardstown south of 264, nearish to Appliance Park.)

"And why are there so many check-cashing businesses in Louisville?" --

Because they a profitable.

I have no dog in this hunt, don't really have an opinion, but the Kentucky Legislature has taken many stabs at keeping these businesses under control.

I do have a dog in the hunt when it comes to education. A huge majority of the people using these services are examples of the failures of JCPS since merger. JCPS could be/should be the best public educational system in the US. It is so mired in adult politics that the children are left standing in the cold.

We could really get into some spirited discussions about this, but until all the arguers are willing to accept facts rather than distorted emotional attitudes, we won't get it fixed.

I've never used one myself, but I don't know that they are exactly like those payday loans places. To be honest I would have thought that something like that would taken a downturn, in the age of ultimate technology. But there are still people that do not have bank accounts, and many banks will not cash checks if you don't have an account with them.

I can recall seeing check cashing joints in most areas of Louisville and surrounds, so I don't know if it's a seedy business, or just something of necessity? I wouldn't know; I've had my own bank account since I was 14 and just putting babysitting money into it.....

anybody else able to answer what the go is with all check cashing places on Bardstown??

Cheers!

Check cashing places ARE payday loan factories. Some say TOmato others say toMATO.

You'd think 34% interest would be considered obscene but apparently not.
