Alan, we were contemplating a move to NoVa in the Bull Run Mountains. Still a little rural but within an hour of Washington, DC. (We're big history buffs and think it would be awesome to leave near there and the 50 or so great museums, plus within an hour or so of several major Civil War National Parks.)

Can you tell me anything about that area?

I've never heard of it. That may not be even a part of NoVA. I would be careful to see if any rural area you are considering faces enroachment from the sprawl of DC. The sprawl has tore up some beautiful rural areas.
