Hey everyone. I will be graduating from college next June with a degree in Health Information Management. I keep checking jobs in the field and it seems like Norton Hospital in Louisville always has openings so I will more than likely apply there. My wife and I currently live in Northern KY and not that familiar with the Louisville area/surrounding areas. She does not like to drive in large cities so I was wondering if you could tell me some great surrounding counties/cities that are great to live, not too big, and to raise a will-be 1 year old child. This place to live will also be the one where we purchase our first home and we are not rich to say the least, so low housing prices are a plus as well. I don't mind driving 30-40 minutes into Louisville for a job. My wife currently works in a doctors office so she will be applying for something in the medical office environment.

Thanks so much!

I won't disappoint the regulars on this forum. In Kentucky, there is only Oldham County that fits your criteria. We live in Crestwood and fly out of CVG about as often as we do Louisville. It's a great place to raise a child. Safe, ultra-rural (not suburban), all the staple shopping a home needs, plus close to everything. Great regional hospital located in LaGrange (I-71 at exit 22) Housing isn't the cheapest, but is certainly a great value.

You might also want to look @ Bardstown. The Hwy. 245 area might be a good fit for you. Semi-rural area with houses in all different price ranges. Close to Bardstown, Etown & Louisville for shopping.

The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth just built a really beautiful replacement for Bardstown's aging Flaget Hospital. They built it a few miles west of Bardstown, out Hwy. 245. That spurred some serious growth out that corridor (which is a wonderful drive in spring & fall) and that puts you closer to the I65 shot into downtown Louisville.

It also puts you really close to one of this area's treasures. Bernheim Forest: Welcome to Bernheim Arboretum And Research Forest

There are several areas that fit your criteria. Bardstown is certainly one of them but access to Louisville isn't so easy from there. Since you are on a tight budget and don't mind a commute certainly Lagrange in Oldham Co. comes to mind but Shelbyville is a great alternative too. Mt. Washington is another alternative that has affordable housing and great demographics and it's just 10 to 15 minutes from I-265 (aka "The Gene Snyder"). I could name more but for the sake of brevity you can ask the next question.

Thanks so much for all the recommendations. What are some of the main realty companies in the Louisville Metro area? We found Semonin Realty, who says that they are the largest and they have a ton of listings that we have found to like. Hopefully there will be a good variety this time next year. So far, we have found great homes in Oldham, Nelson, Shelby and Bullitt Counties. We really like these areas. We also may look into the Indiana counties Harrison, Floyd, and Clark. Anyone know anything about these? Just from the looks of it, I am partial to Oldham/Bullitt counties based on what they offer and the closeness.

I know much about some and a little about all those counties. In my role as an appraiser I've worked in all the areas you mention but I am partial to Ky. Much of my family lives in Oldham but I'm in Bullitt.

Keller Williams Realty received the highest overall satisfaction ratings from home buyers among the largest full-service real estate firms from J.D. Power and Associates for the second year in a row (2008 & 2009). I'm a Realtor at their Louisville East office. If you want to buy in Indiana we have a new office over their too.

As a buyers agent I offer savings guarantees and other services like 'best buy' lists and list of houses that are selling for less than they appraised for several years ago. So much for the shameless pitch.

While the broker-owner of a RE/MAX office in Crestwood/LaGrange, I can recommend any number of outstanding Realtors who are both in and out of the nationally known franchises. Our office happens to have a very high percentage of agents with CRS, GRI, ABR, CDPE, SFR, and other designations. Our average agent has been a professional for almost 14 years.

A good method of finding the best agent is to ask Realtors this question, "Besides yourself and other agents in your firm, who do you believe would be the very best agent to help me?" I can tell you about several great agents throughout the Louisville Metropolitan Statistical Area.
