Mount Washington (Louisville, Bardstown, Shepherdsville: crime, big house, neighborhoods)

My husband and I are planning on moving to Louisville next summer. We are wondering about the different neighborhoods listed ... when we look at houses we look at the Mount Washington area. There was a post on here that said that Mount Washington was a reasonable distance from downtown and it was beautiful. I can't believe the prices for homes! (we live in San Diego right now. . . the most OVERPRICED homes in the country!)

My husband and I are looking for a nice area to raise our daughter (14 months old). Would Mount Washington be considered a good neighborhood to consider?

Mount Washington is a VERY fast growing exurban area. The people there are very southern and friendly, and you can get a huge house for very cheap to raise a family. It is in a separate county from Louisville, Bulitt. Bullitt has a decent school system, but not the best shopping around right now. It will be about a 10 minute drive to the nearest big box retail, and Mount Washington is a good 30 minutes from downtown Louisville unless you are in traffic. I hear the community is tight knit, and lives like a small town on the outskirts of a large city.

You might also try looking into Oldham County if your concerned about school systems. Oldham county schools are award winning schools and are considered to be some of the best in the state. It is about a 25-30 min. commute to downtown, general shopping is nearby (such as a Kroger or Walmart) however we are only about 15 min. or less from the Jefferson county border where we do most of our shopping at "the summit". Oldham County is close to the city but we still have a small town feel, but wherever you end up in the Louisville area I am sure you will love it, it is a great place to live. I have heard a number of people who have moved here from California say they just love it here and are very happy they made the move, so I hope that helps in case you're nervous! I think you will find Oldham Co a little more "upscale" than Bullitt, at the risk of stereotyping. If you are used to SD housing, you'll think you're in heaven when you make it to Kentucky!

One warning: we love out-of-towners who think they are getting a great deal on a house when they are really overpaying for this area. Make sure your realtor gives you neighborhood comps.

Thank you all for responding to my question! It's difficult moving without knowing what the different towns are like. I know more about Western Ky because my dad lives there, but I've never been to the Louisville area. My husband and I have been looking up a lot of information online. . . pictures of homes on remax.com and different sites with photos of the area. We won't get a chance to travel there before next summer, so this forum means a lot to us!

Are there any other areas that might be a good choice for raising a family? My husband and I want to move to an area where the homes have nice yards (an impossibility in San Diego) for our daughter to play in, the homes are around 200 k or less, is safe, and good commuting distance (30 mins. or less) to downtown Louisville.

Also, how bad is the traffic around the city? For example, would it add another 30 mins onto the normal 30 min. commute to Mount Washington?

Unless there is a wreck, you should almost always be able to get downtown from Mount Washington in 30 minutes. However, if you will commute into downtown 9-5 every day, you will definitely need to give yourself an hour to get there in the morning, even if you can make it in 25-30 minutes 90% of the time. The major artery serving the area, Bardstown Road, moves pretty well, and has a high speed limit with few stop lights until you get to the Gene Snyder Freeway. KY 44 in Bullitt County has very bad congestion because it is a 2 lane road connecting two of Kentucky's fastest growing towns, Mount Washington and Shepherdsville. Because Shepherdsville is located on I-65, it is only about a 20 minute drive downtown if you drive speedy. If you choose a subdivision on KY 44, beware that things will back up sometimes, but absolutely nothing like CA. The traffic (or lack thereof) will be a refresher for you coming from San Diego, and this is a distinct advantage to living in Louisville and its suburbs (which lacks the beach and the fancy name recognition of course )

Bullitt has above average schools for the state and is perhaps the best bargain in the metro area. That said, the feel and vibe of it is often too "country" or "southern" for some people. It is certainly a favorite relocation spot for many living in Louisville looking to get away from the city, and also for many young families who want a big house for cheap or who have relocated here from rural KY or similar spots.

Most likely, I would expand my search to include the greater 13 county metro area, and you will find alot of good options in the 200k range depending on what you want, new or old, etc.

I grew up in Mt WAshington from the age of 10 until after I graduated high school. I moved into Louisville and lived various places in the city. I moved back to Mt WAshington in 2005. I love being back here. My kids love it (I have 5) and life here is wonderful. The crime is MUCH lower than Louisville, the schools are good, less crowding, no bussing. There are many perks to living in Mt Washington. Walmart is 6 miles away, as is Kroger. Gas is cheaper here than Louisville also. Today is $3.08 6 miles down the road, and here in town its $2.84. I would never move back to Louisville.

If I had kids, no question I'd choose Oldham County over Bullitt County.

Mt. Washington is a very "clique" oriented city you need to get in with the right person in order for your children to be recognized
