Default houses made of fieldstone

Does anyone have any input on the advantages/disadvantages of buying a home that is mostly constructed of fieldstone? The house I'm referring to is 40 years old. Are they hard to resell? Are they usually poorly insulated/well insulated? Is the stone sturdy or do I have to worry about deterioration? Can anyone suggest a website that might have info on this subject? Thanks

We grew up in Bucks County, PA and will be moving to Louisville this year. My dream was to own a Pennsylvania fieldstone home, so I'm a little biased on this subject. Of course the fieldstone homes I'm used to are hundreds of years old. That should tell you about their durability. They're simply beautiful! The home your talking about is 40 years old so I would imagine it's insulated to the point homes were back in the late 60's/early 70's. (And if you decide not to buy it, let me know where it is... )

If you are looking for photos, here are some I found on Google (copy and paste entire string except for url tags front and back... if anyone can tell me how to set up a link, please let me know):

Good luck!

A lot depends on whether the fieldstone is veneer or solid. I would bet that a 40 year old home is veneer. That is the walls are stick built using 2x4's or 2x6's with an outside sheathing material and an interior drywall/plaster surface. On the outside of the exterior sheathing fieldstone, brick, other rock or rocklike stones are stacked and attached to the sheathing using metal tabs and wires.

If a home is veneer, there is no value difference between brick and fieldstone.

Looking at those pictures, maybe it isn't fieldstone. My realtor told me it was, but she didn't say whether or not it was veneer. Without giving away my MLS to the Pennsylvania spy, , this MLS (1270947) is an example of the way the stone looks. You're right Tomocox, its probably not real. I like it though. I just wonder how popular that stone look is. Is it a fad or is it something that will always be in style. Heck, maybe its not in style.

Yes, that home is a veneer fieldstone. It's a pretty one! A nice looking home of that style will never lose value simply because it has a stone veneer.

My personal home has a mix of brick, fieldstone, & woodsiding.
