I had my left hip replaced by Dr. Barnes on March 23, 2011 and would have him do it again in a New York minute! There weren't any complications from the surgery itself, just a personal one. AFTER the catheter was remove, I had to have extra fluids, and that meant getting up for the potty every 1 1/2 - 2 hours! But I made it through the night just fine!
I was released from the hospital Friday (3/25) afternoon and by Saturday morning was able to walk around our home using only a walker for support. I took my first shower, unassisted, Saturday afternoon and finally felt human again. Walking unassisted keeps getting easier.
Don't get me wrong - there's pain. Just not from the hip area, I think it's from the 'table' and the way one's body has to be flipped and flopped around, the backs of my thighs and butt cheeks seem to have caught the worst of it.
I had my first of six out patient therapies this afternoon, COMPLETELY wore me out!
My suggestion? Defineately have the surgery if you're eligible, follow the instructions and stay ahead of the pain.
The OP (original poster) is my mother, and she too had her surgery on the same day you did! Small world isn't it? She has had some pretty good pain, was running a low grade fever, and just got home today. Her first PT is tomorrow. She agrees with you that he is a wonderful doctor. I am sure she will be posting back here when she feels more able to. The pain meds really wiped her out.
Yes - Hughston clinic is very good - Dad had his Knee replacement there a coupe of years ago. The reason Mom didn't go there for her hip replacement (she had one a couple of years ago on the other side), is that Dr. Bill Barnes of Piedmont Orthopaedics does the new type of hip replacement. Recovery time is much less, it is less invasive, and Mom really had an easier time of sleeping since you don't have to lie flat and can sleep in any position. Also, after the first hip replacement, Mom's legs were a little uneven and she thought she might have to get a lift for her shoe. She went for the other hip replacement & with this procedure, he can level the length of the legs and get them exactly even - which is hard to do with the older procedure. I would ask Mom to respond to this - BUT she and Dad are at the beach!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL
My husband had Killebrew, who has offices in Macon and WR. Don't know if he takes Medicare or not.
