Default High School Senior Now Scared

Hello,
I live in Maryland and have a daughter who was considering attending Wesleyan College in Macon, Ga next fall. She has been doing research about Macon and is now scared to death to even apply to the school because of all the grisly reports about the crime in the area and all the snobby people. I did some research and now I'm concerned for her. Although we have not toured the college, we really liked this one out of the many schools she has considered. Living in the Md, DC and Va area, we do many cultural things and my child is used to going to cafes, the movies, decent malls where we are not worried about our safety, museums, sporting events and plays etc....I would hate for her to be a prisoner at the college. Every one knows that my area has its share of problems with gangs, drugs, crime etc..however, i have spent my life living in pretty safe areas and staying away from crime ridden ones when I can help it. If anyone has any input, I would greatly appreciate your time and thoughts.
Peace and blessings to us all,
Concerned Mom in Maryland

tbmb0315, Wesleyan is in the nicest area of Macon. North Macon. Please come visit and see the area for yourself. Forsyth Rd, Forest Hill Rd, Zebulon Rd, Northside Dr, etc. It's all your typical suburbia environment. Most, if not all, of these areas I believe are not even technically in Macon city proper where the very vast majority of the crime is. Even within the city proper, most of the crime happens in pockets or areas that nobody would need to go into, unless they personally lived in the area or are looking for trouble. The problem is that some of these pockets can be very crime infested, so you may see several headlines about some random crime, but again, no one has any need to even go into these areas, and they arent near Wesleyan. She can enjoy her cafes, the area mall (Shoppes At River Crossing) and the movies (Amstar) in safe environment right there in North Macon.

My daughter will be so glad someone posted a reply with some information. Thank you so much. This helps us to feel better because she really likes the school and they offer money for her Girl Scout Award. Thanks again.

I agree.Macon does have crime, but it usually crime among people in the wrong place at the wrong time. Also crimes of opportunity. As long as she uses "street smart" when outside of her main area of comfort(I.E.when away from campus at night in unfamiliar territory).
Macon is a small city but has quite of bit of history and local attractions.Maybe no like D.C. but as long as she accepts it for what it is and not what it is not,she will flourish.

I agree with the above posts. Wesleyan is in one of the nicest areas of Macon and the shopping and entertainment in that area would meet a majority of her needs without going anywhere near the pockets of extreme poverty where most of the crime occurs.

You should come visit and see for yourself.

Contrary to what a few of these people have written, ALL areas of Macon are subject to crime. The crime IS starting to spread out to that area, and denying it is only proof that some stick their heads in the sand.

There are a LOT better schools all over America to go to. Read the stats on Macon on THIS site.

This is not a perfect world, anywhere can be the location of a random crime. I dont believe anyone on this board has said there is a place where you can be 100% free of ANY crime. However, to act as if living and going about your daily life in North Macon puts yourself at the same risk as hanging around some package store off 2nd Street after the street lights come on, is a joke and misleading. Speaking on the facts, look up the crimes, the vast majority are in the same high crime areas. I will say this since people love to twist words. Note that I said vast majority, so bringing up an occurrence of a crime in a "good" area does not "disprove" or "counter" my comments, as I didnt say it never happens, just not nearly as likely.

Truth be told, I stay in an East Macon neigborhood directly on the Jones County line. There are areas in Macon (such as where Wesleyan is) that are safer and much further away from crime ridden neighborhoods than where I live, and still in my particular neighborhood, crime is rare. I wouldnt have a clue about most of these crime unless I watched the news or read macon.com. If I can live where I am in Macon and feel safe, then someone can definitely stay in North Macon or the Rutland area, Hartley Bridge, etc. and feel even more safe.

If a person is truly interested in the best wishes of Macon, why would they try to stray a person away from moving here and attending a decent school in a very nice part of town by bringing up crimes in which 90% (or higher) of them happen in areas that arent anywhere near where that person will be, nor would ever be???

If a person said they were interested in moving on Mercer Univ. Dr, then my words would be different. Let's not be a doomsayer. Well, tbmb0315, is coming and will see the area for herself.

So what area do you live in that is not subject to crime?Weslyann graduates hundreds of students each year.If the problem was that bad,the school would be closed.Read the reviews about going to school their by the students who are in enrolled.

No one has said there was not a crime problem in Macon.Just as you say crime has began to spread out that way, still does not make it a bad area infested with crime.Crime has gone down over the last 3 or three years also.
How is it sticking my head in the sand if I or none of my family have been victims of serous crime in MACON?EVER?

It sounds more like you are more scared of your own shadow.
