MILLEDGEVILLE. Both are college towns, though Statesboro is far more dominated and heavily influenced by the precence of Georgia Southern University than Milledgeville is by Georgia College & State University (which only has about one-third the enrollment of GSU).

But the GC&SU campus is simply gorgeous and seamlessly integrated with the equally charming and very lively downtown area of Milledgeville -- not unlike a miniature Athens. The GSU campus, on the other hand, is rather flat and suburban looking IMO and consists mostly of newer buildings that just lack the charm or scale of an inviting academic city. Also, while Stateboro has a decently charming downtown, it is not connected to the university campus in any way and thus lacks a certain energy.

Milledgeville was Georgia's antebellum capital and is far more beautiful and historic, with some impressive restored homes, tree-lined streets and the original gothic-inspired state Capitol building sitting high and center in the middle of town, on the campus of Georgia Military College. The surrounding countryside is also quite scenic, with the popular Lake Sinclair and Lake Oconee resort areas just north of town. Statesboro is surrounded for miles and miles in every direction by cotton and soybean fields.

Statesboro is certainly larger, better educated, growing faster. But Milledgeville is more interesting.

Yeah I know right? If given a choice even I would prefer living in Statesboro but the question was which was more UNIQUE and Milledgeville certainly is that! And I didn't even touch on the whole Central State Hospital thing ... world's largest insane asylum? Hello?

And I don't think any anyplace in Georgia is quite as "unique" as this:
The Kingston Lounge: Central State Hospital, Milledgeville, GA
