Monroe County is where Macon meets Atlanta. Monroe County is part of Macon Metro and North Monroe has subdivisions that alot of people from So Metro area are moving too . BTW Macon is not 100 miles from ATL. More like 87 from downtown to downtown but less than an hour from North Macon to Henry County.

henry county is not part of atlanta, it might be part of the METRO, but we are not suburbs of atlanta only parts of far northern henry county and clayton county are suburbs of atlanta.

Same can be said for the I-85 corridor and Columbus.

Macon -
I only read a couple of comments but I have lived in the Macon area for about 3 years now. Moved from WV right outside of DC. Macon has a lot of potential but that being said there is a lot of crime here. My husband is a macon police officer - started on here we when we moved - and the problem is lack of funding for the police - they are constantly short people - and for the most part what is considered to be Macon - downtown area is alright. There is crime down there and a female shouldn't walk alone downtown at night by herself but during the day its fine for the most part. The problem here is that there is a large percentage of the population living below the poverty line and on welfare. So there is a lack of a tax base to fix up areas and have funding for the infastructure.
There is a huge gang problem here and the mall has problems with fights on Friday and Saturday nights. North Macon is nicer for sure but I live just south of Macon closer to Warner Robins and it is a nice area. We never have any problems here. Most of the stores are starting to pull of the Macon Mall once the new strip type mall is finished further north on 75 - a lot of growth in that direction and south of Macon of as well - but very little in Macon.
There has been an increase in car jackings lately but that seems to normal around the christmas time. As far as a suburb of Atlanta goes - it like anything depends on what you view as suburb - if you view the fact that a lot of people do drive to atlanta and work there then yes it is a suburb - if u view a suburb as being able to just go up there anytime you want and having the amenities of a much larger city then no.
everyone views things differently. so it depends on where ur coming from. Is it as bad as a large city and you will get robbed and killed just by walking around no - are there large portions of Macon you should stay away from yes. Recently there have been reports of joggers getting robbed around the Mercer Campus. THe problem is that very little of what happens honestly makes it on the news.

no it's not, well, at least no where I live. i will admit though, that atlanta has sprawled out to the stockbridge/mcdonough area. which i HATE beacuse they are building subdivisions in almost every corner of henry county on rural areas, and all the dirt roads that we used to have here for 4-wheelers are becoming paved.

Good post Holly and you are absolutely correct. If you look at it by the numbers (population), then Macon has more crime than ALOT of far larger cities.

Fulton, Gwinnett, De Kalb, Cobb and Clayton are inner suburbs of ATL. For other counties like Henry, Fayette, Coweta, Bartow, Paulding, etc are outer suburbs of ATL.

One thing about Macon (after being here 34 years) is that IF we didn't have so many private schools then our public school system would be VERY different but too many think private school is prestigous so Bibb Counties schools will have a hard time changing their scores anytime soon. Macon is a good place to live other than schools. It has shopping,(new coming) restaurants, specialty stores, and yet NOT near the traffic Atlanta has, yes bad areas but all in all it is OK but of course not perfect. It is a decent place to live if you know where to buy a house. Lots of hometown folks though so it is harder for outsiders coming in to Macon.
Lack of White collar higher paying jobs (non medical) and schools are what hurt Macon. IMO
Hopefully Macon can get it together to attract more businesses not just factories (which I know those jobs are needed too). We need large corporations here as well. How we get them here I don't know since Atlanta is right up the road.
