The Historic Macon Foundation hosted a plaque dedication Saturday in honor of Ingleside Historic District, Macon's newest National Register historic district.
The dedication commemorating Ingleside as a National Register of Historic Places Historic District will took place in Henry Burns Park.
The national register historic district designation recognizes the important role this neighborhood plays in Macon’s history and its architectural contributions.
Emily Hopkins, of the Macon Historic Foundation, said the designation will help improve the area.
"Things like being able to utilize historic tax credit for different rehabilitation work, or improving your home, that sort of thing. All those will be open now to properties that are in Ingleside,” Hopkins said.
The Ingleside neighborhood began under the leadership of developer Louis A. Tharpe in 1917 and was billed as "Macon's Most Beautiful Suburb," a moniker the area lives up to today. Lots featured 100 feet of frontage and a 200-foot depth; all located only a 15-minute streetcar ride from offices in downtown Macon.
Architects such as Ellamae Ellis League, William F. Oliphant, J. Neel Reid and W. Elliott Dunwody each created one-of- a-kind architectural treasures for the neighborhood.
