The number one archaeological site in the nation just keep getting better and way to go for Macon having a true tourist destination/attraction that is 100% free, only 5 minutes away from downtown attractions & hotels. Such a wonderful place. I still cannot believe that it is free. I hope one day soon it will finally become a National Park, and get even more of the recognition it deserves!

That's the point being made with this thread. On December 2, 2016 the Ocmulgee National Monument became a national park. There are currently seventeen national parks in the Southeast United States (including the Ocmulgee Indian Mounds/Ocmulgee National Monument). This will be the first National Park in the state of Georgia. Bringing the total number of National Parks in the United States of America to sixty.

My corrections... Ocmulgee National Monument has just become a National Treasure. There is a bill in place that if passed will make it become a National Park. On the list of National Treasures the Ocmulgee National Monument will now be right on there with areas like the Grand Canyon and other places. If the bill to make it become a National Park is ever passed then it will give the National Park Service the leeway to add an additional 2,000 acres to the park, to its already current 700+ acres. Georgia has two National Treasures. This includes the Ocmulgee National Monument.
