Amici, which means “friends” in Italian, will be a nearly 6,000-square-foot restaurant. It will join Papa John’s Pizza and Momma Goldberg’s Deli, which have already opened in the development.
The franchisee owners, Jonathan “Bob” Ewing and Jon Joiner, had been looking at putting a restaurant in Macon and the Madison-based franchisor had some interest in it, Ewing said. The men also own the Amici restaurants in Milledgeville and at Lake Oconee.
“We feel Macon is obviously in a growth spurt right now and it’s a good time to definitely get in,” he said. “And as anybody in business says, location is very key, and the location that Jim (Daws) came to us with is a very prime location and it was hard to turn him down. We think that being that close to the college, and all the sports that are right there … it will be a win-win for the university, for us and obviously for Jim.”
Jim Daws, president of Macon-based Sierra Development Group, developed Mercer Landing.
“This will be a great addition to Mercer and Macon,” he said in an email.
A new beer growler is coming to Mercer Landing as well...

Growler USA is moving into Suite 300 at 1530 Mercer University Drive, which is between Papa John’s Pizza and Momma Goldberg’s at Mercer Landing, said franchise owner Danny Patel.
“Most of the construction is midway done,” Patel said. “Hopefully, by the end of April I think I will be ready to open.”
The 2,000-square-foot restaurant will have a few seat outdoors, he said.
“It will have 100 taps of mostly hand-crafted, microbrew,” but it also will serve hard cider, green tea and other non-alcoholic drinks, he said. The restaurant will be open seven days a week and will serve lunch and dinner. The menu will include such items as wings, burgers and salads. There are certain items the franchise always has on the menu and some other items Patel will change from month to month.
Although known for its craft beer, the restaurant will be family-friendly, and it will have a child’s menu, Patel said.
He expects to hire about 30-35 workers and job seekers may apply after Tuesday at the website, www.growlerusa.com or in person after Wednesday. Applicants may also send resumes to Patel at danny.amita@growlerusa.com.
