My husband might take a job in Byron. We haven’t been there to visit yet. Just wondering about Byron and other towns near there. Are there small towns with nice main streets? Is Macon really as bad for crime as it’s made out to be? Also, not worried about schools because our youngest will graduate before we would move.

Byron the historic town is tiny and Main St is comprised of some historic homes, but that is about it. It has become a bedroom community of Macon and Warner Robins as it is between the two (closer to Warner Robins).

Macon is the historic cultural and business center of the area and like every other midsized Southern city has very nice parts and a fair number of crime-ridden parts. I live in Macon in a very safe historic neighborhood near downtown and spend many evenings at downtown restaurants, shows, and events without incident. Unless you are cruising through high crime areas to buy drugs or such, most have no issues. Macon is the beautiful old downtown, home of the arts, plays, concerts, symphony, independent restaurants, etc. Older city.

Warner Robins is the suburban family-focused center of the area. Miles of single family subdivisions, strip malls, chain restaurants, t-ball, high school football, basically what one finds in typical suburban America. Newer city, mostly good schools, next to the Air Force base. A few high crime areas, but as a suburban locale, mostly nice and quiet.

As for small towns with downtown Main Streets that aren't depressed, it is a little tough to find. Most of the small towns have some historic beautiful homes near their center, but the business part of them struggle. It depends on what you are looking for. Downtown Perry has a nice Main Street feel to it with some nice little places to shop and eat. I like visiting Perry.

Working in Byron affords you many choices. Macon to be in an older historic city, Warner Robins or Byron itself for a suburban feel. Plenty of open land to the west of Byron if you desire space and a more rural feel but still close to amenities. There is something for just about anyone here except large city amenities and Atlanta is just up the road about 90 minutes for that. Come check us out and good luck.

Thank you so much for your response. We're looking forward to visiting, probably in October. I'm happy to hear that you have no issues in downtown Macon. Some people make it sound like the whole city is high crime.
