I have family in the Macon area, and I personally don't have any issues with it. Its just like any mid-size city when it comes to crime and the same inner-city problems with drugs, gangs, poverty, etc. The school system there is nothing to brag about, but then again not many public school districts in Georgia are, especially the inner-city schools. I personally wouldn't live in the City of Macon or Bibb County. I would strongly recommend if able Jones County, it has excellent schools, low-crime, located minutes from Macon, and Milledgeville, and its a middle to upper working class community. Houston County to the south is also a great option and it is a very fast growing area. Monroe County also seems to be a good area.

The other area was east Atlanta? Do you both have jobs lined up in either East Atl or Macon?

Yes we both have jobs lined up. My husbands job is located in Macon, however I can work from home. The address for my husbands job will be, 7591 NE Industrial Blvd, Macon, GA. If we can find something not to far away from that area, it would be great. Another benefit is my parents live in B'ham, AL and I really want to live with a few hours driving distance. We live in the midwest now. I think I have my work cut out for me in finding a suitable place for our family. We won't to live in a diverse area.

Your husband's work is South of Macon, close to the airport. It's closer to Warner Robins or Byron than Macon (downtown).
Macon has urban areas (intown), street-car suburban areas (close to downtown), suburban areas (north and south), and country areas (outer counties). It all depends on what you consider a diverse area.
If you want public schools, you will have to go into the area north of the city or south to Warner Robins (Houston County). Either place you will still be close enough to Macon if you crave diversity/culture (theater, symphony, etc). Both areas are suburban with strip malls and housing developments.

Not sure what size home you are looking for in Macon but if a home just under 2000 sq ft built in '06 that we purchased new fall of '06 interests you, please let me know. I am just off I-475 Zebulon Road west so that would be close for you to access the interstate to Warner Robins etc.
The public school system in this area is said to be one of the best.
Thank you.

Update. Thanks for all the info. They offered my husband a transfer to Birmingham Alabama, and he took it. All of my family is there and this is where I originally wanted to move to.
