Default Macon, Georgia [All you need to know]

Macon, Georgia is a city located in Central Georgia.

It is within easy reach of the Georgia Sea Coast, Augusta, Atlanta, Columbus, and Florida. An easy commute to Atlanta is not any longer than an hour and 15 minutes. You are even closer to the Southern Atlantan suburbs which all have a charm of their own. Location has helped Macon grow into the one of the most important distributive centers in Georgia and the Southeast. These distribution centers are popping up everywhere and include Kohl's, Bass Pro Shop's, Sara Lee, and much, much more.

Macon is located in Bibb County, which has a population of 155,000.

The population for the Macon metro area was 379,669 in 2005 and is growing at a steady pace. The city of Macon had a population of 97,255 in 2005. The city's population is currently on the decline because many citizen's are moving to northern part and the southern part of the county because of its growing housing market and better schools. The county is actually growing, while the city is on the decline in population. There is alot of work in the city to reverse this trend currently, and they seem to be having much success. The rate of decline is decreasing, and many new subdivisions are popping up within the city limits.

Macon has a charming 'Southern' downtown with many attractions, restaurants, and broad avenues. Attractions downtown include the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame [The largest in America], The Georgia Music Hall of Fame, The Tubman African-American Museum, The Hay House [A beautiful Renaissance-style mansion], St. Joseph's Cathedral, Douglass Theatre, Capitol Theatre, The Georgia Children's and Theatre Museum, The Old Bus Terminal Station, The Sidney Lanier Cottage, Pleasant Hill [an old African-American neighborhood which is on the National Register of Historical Places], Fort Hawkins, The Coliseum Sports and Convention Center, The Ocmulgee Indian Mounds [overlooking downtown], The Grand Opera House, The Cannonball House [Another Civil War type house] The Woodruff House, and much much more!! The downtown has numerous antebellum and civil war houses that are extraordinarily beautiful!! When General Sherman marched through the city, he had the chance to burn it down, but he thought it was too beautiful for such a thing. Several towns throughout Georgia were burned to the ground, but beautiful Macon was saved. The downtown has numerous restaurants that range from Japanese to Mexican, and now Italian with a new restaurant that will be opened downtown. There are many plans for downtown currently including numerous new skyscrapers, apartments, movie/art studios, restaurants, nightclubs, and shopping! There is a tour on trolleys in downtown and the drivers are extremely friendly and informative. It is amazingly cheap 25 Cents [I know, that seems crazy], but it really is that cheap. Once I gave the bus driver a 10 dollar tip because I told him that's how much I payed on my trolley ride in Savannah. He was very greatful! Not too far from downtown is the Macon Museum of Arts and Sciences.

Macon natives have had a great influence upon music of the United States. The kazoo was invented in the city during the 1840s. Macon has been the birthplace or hometown to such musicians as The Allman Brothers Band, Mark Heard, Lucille Hegamin, Lena Horne, Otis Redding, and Little Richard, as well as more recent names like violinist Robert McDuffie, rapper Young Jeezy, Phil Walden and country artist Jason Aldean. There is a symphony orchestra in the city, and they play in the Grand Opera House. The Grand Opera House is famous for its show of the Nutracher, Sound of Music, Stomp, and much more.

Festivals in Macon include:
International Cherry Blossom Festival - Macon is known as the "Cherry Blossom Capital of the World." It boasts over 300,000 Yoshino Cherry Trees, more than any other city in the world. During mid-March of every year, the height of the trees' bloom, Macon holds this 10-day celebration of concerts, food festivals, arts and crafts shows, parades, street markets, picnics, dances, and exhibitions of artists from around the world. The city becomes bathed in pink, the symbolizing color of this event, reflecting the color of the blossoms. The festival is by far Macon's largest and most well-known event. It has become among the top 20 events in the South, top 50 in the United States, and one of the top 100 in North America.

First Night Macon - First Night Macon is a family-oriented arts festival held in Macon every New Year's Eve. It features many concerts, dances, art shows, and theatrical performances at different venues and galleries around the downtown area, and a grand finale of fireworks at midnight.

Pan African Festival - Macon has a rich African American cultural heritage. Each year in April, Macon holds the Pan-African Festival featuring parades, African and Caribbean musical performances, African dancing, films, food festival, cultural shows, and exhibitions.

Ocmulgee Indian Celebration - A celebration of Macon's original Native American Heritage, this festival is held every September at Ocmulgee National Monument. Representatives from diverse backgrounds of Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, Seminole, and other nations come to share stories, exhibit native art, perform dances, and play live music.

The Georgia State Fair - The Fair is held in Central City Park every year starting in late September.

Macon is served by Macon regional Airport.

Our main daily newspaper is the Macon Telegraph.

A great magazine in our area is the Macon Magazine.

The Macon area is a shopping oasis. In Macon there are thousands of stores, the main one's I can remember of now include Kohl's, Bass Pro Shops, numerous Wal Marts, numerous Targets, Best Buy, Academy Sport's Store, Media Play, Numerous Home-Depots, Lowe's, Kroger's, TJ Maxx, Ross, etc.

Macon Mall is the biggest mall in Georgia outside of the Atlanta area.
It contains stores like JC Penny, Sears, Belk's, etc.

Stores, restaurants are popping up everywhere in Macon. I can't remember all of them, but we sure do have a large variety for a city our size!!

And this is just Macon!!!!!!!!!! Just South [14 miles] is Warner Robins, a booming BOOMING TOWN!!!! It has thousands of new shopping centers, thousands of new houses, and wonderful restaurants!! The schools there are wonderful!!

I haven't even mentioned local towns like Fort Valley, Perry, Byron, Jeffersonville, Gray, Forsyth, Vienna, Cochran, Hawkinsville and Montezuma yet!!

You forgot to mention that Macon is a hellhole, and that you stand a good chance of being killed if you stop for gas there. Anyone reading this, do yourself a favor....NEVER MOVE TO MACON! I grew up in the area, and am a former Macon Police Officer. Trust me, Macon is the last place you want to visit, let alone live. Warner Robins is a great town, and there are some nice areas far outside Macon. However, the city itself is awful. It's like a small Detroit, only not as nice.

Ulsterscot good way to put that, well everyone, our wonderful mayor, who has caused the city so much pain and suffering delieverd his best City of the State Address, which was held at the Historic Douglas Theatre, it was his best speech ever as mayor, because he spoke withs such strenght, and was vert definiative, about his final speech, mayb that was why his speech was so good, because it was his last.

LOL....I hope no one is basing their decision to move to Macon based on these two extremes.

I was born in Macon and worked there many years as an adult. I have to agree with ulterscot that I was lucky to get out alive.

LMAO at you guys!!!!

Yea, it is funny, but to say Macon is a hellhole, that's a little extreme.

The Internet is on a distinguished road
For those in Macon, can anyone tell me anything about these two apartment complexes I'm interested in (like location, crime around the area, etc..)

I'm probably going to tour Macon sometime this summer...One of my friends is headed to Mercer, so I'll just follow him and go to Macon State, since they offer my major , since I was told Macon State is in a pretty decent area.

Seems like South Macon / Warner Robins area has developed sort of a seedy red-light district. I passed through there this last weekend and was a little creeped out by what's happening to the nice "southern charm" that used to be in this area.
