The only way u can back your information is on true information, use census.gov and compare the two cities they come noweher close, for one Macon is nowhere as near as large as Detroit so its not possible to have that much crime, or the 90,000 people population Macon has inclduing me would be about 20,000, I would be the first to leave, but hey its not some im going to keep my downtown loft until it reaches that status.

Macon, Georgia is a nice town, as everyone has already said, it has a bad crime rate....
But this is only in the bad pockets of town....
These crimes mostly happen in the parking lots of bars in South Macon and Northern Downtown, and in the projects.
Most of Macon is pretty safe.
I don't even dare go to the bad areas, and if you don't, you will be safe..
Like some people have said, the schools that serve the projects are bringing the county's reputation in school down.... Many North Macon schools are superb....
There are wonderful private schools all over Macon.
Shopping and Dining are great, museums, theatre, and culture is wonderful...
Festivals year round. Great location Macon is in. Close to Savannah, Atlanta, North Florida Beaches, Jacksonville, Okefonokee Swamps, Smoky Mountains, Birmingham, Augusta, Montgomery, etc.
Job growth is healthy and on the increase. Many high paying distributive jobs are locating in the area.
The counties and towns surrounding Macon are wonderful.
I guess the real problem in Middle Georgia is the Projects and other bad areas that keep making us look bad...

Ok so I am seeing that many different people have different ideas of the area. I guess thats true about anywhere you move. My parents are moving to Jones County, GA is that a good area for people in their early 40's? Thanks so much for everything so far! I really appreciate all of the information this is so helpful for me and my family to be.

Yes Jones Co. is a great place, but I would suggest moving out into Lizella, GA, its about 10 minutes from Macon, however it is still located within Bibb Co. Lizella along with North, and South Bibb Co. are some of the safest, smartest, healthiest, and wealthiest areas of Middle Georgia. All of these areas are expected to see huge growth in commericial, industrial, and residential population.
With the North building a new mall, and becoming Bibb County's shopping area, with great emmenties like Bass Pro Shops, and other great rare franchises. The south becoming really advanced in the job market, with huge distributions center, supplying numerous amounts of jobs. Lizella expected to boom because after building the job market with technology in the south, and providing the best of shopping in the North, the Bibb County Government, will either have to do a huge revitailaztion of Macon, or head west to establish where open fields await to be overtaken by thousands of people, wheter it by housing, jobs, and bussiness. Land in Lizella will be really expensive, and rare to come by in the future, so take your pick.

Stay away from bad areas and you will be safe. Its mostly local crime because of poverty ,but has gotten better. If you look at whats happened in Atlanta with they cleanup of these areas hopefully it will be influenced by other cities in the state like Macon, Savannah, Albany, and Augusta and Montgomery and Birmingham.
I would say the best thing about Macon is the location though. you can get to Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson in less time than it takes some People from the North side to get there and fly to anywhere in the world takes like 45 to 50 minutes from macon. Also alot of lakes out of atlanta traffic but can go to Atlanta anytime you want. My parents used to take us up to Atlanta to the airport to ride the Trams lol when you could just go into the airport without a ticket.
ALso its not a bad drive at all to Panhandle (Destin, Panama City, Orlando)or the Atlantic (Charleston, Hilton Head- Savannah, Jacksonville)
if Mayor of Macon could give some rundown on businiess, population growth, and crime rate since 2000 would be awesome im just interested because I think Macon is gonna have an economic boom soon thats gonna help south GA.

I agree with those who posted about Warner Robins, the area has been growing and does have great school system. If didn't know, Warner Robins air force base is there; so every once in a while you get a sonic boom overhead as the planes go by and everything in your house shakes.
You mentioned roaches, I would consider them palemetto bugs or pine tree bugs...just like in Florida. You just need to get an exterminator to come and spray your home's perimeter. Southern Macon going towards Warner Robins has a gnat line, so south of that line you get alot of gnats in the summer. Plus it gets very hot and sticky.
We lived in Macon 2 different times 1991-1993 and 1997-1999.
Macon has changed over the years and the public school system isn't all that great especially for the middle and high school aged kids and there are hardly no private schools that I can remeber except for 1 catholic high school and 1 catholic elementary school. North Macon is nice but then again you have the schooling problem for older kids and you really are confined to that little pocket of Macon.
We still visit once a year with friends and we are astounded at how some of the most elite neighborhoods in their heyday are now trashed. And the mall was updated a few years ago but I wouldn't go there at night time by myself.
Macon was run by old Maconite money and as the kids of these rich people grew up, they left Macon never to return. Also, the BIG tobacco company that helped Macon economically throughout the 80's and 90's has been bought out and since moved to NC.
The small towns between ATL airport and Macon (about 50 miles) have been growing over the years, I am not sure if the school systems have caught up with that growth. I have seen many billboards on Rt 75 advertising new developments.
Good Luck

The 100th Post
Brown & Williams did not leave do to the city of Macon, Brown & Williamson moved after Governor Sonny Perdue raised taxes on tobacco industries, which rose production prices, and other things that werent really of a problem until the tobacco industry tax went up, so in reality Sonny Perdue drove, B&W away not thecity of Macon, B&W loved the Macon community and was a major part of it, however, sense B&W has left Macon, Bibb Co. has added double the amount of jobs that Perdue drove away.
The Mall is a safe place, an you can enjoy shopping at night as much as 12 o clock in the noon, Macon has also improved on education along with everyone else in middle georgia, including Houston Co., Monroe Co., Jones Co., & Peach Co., but Macon made the most improvements over its 6 High Schools, however it is some ways off from Houston Co., it does pretty well for the economic, & population standpoint.
Citizens of Macon and surrounding areas see hope in the city of Macon, with election right around the corner, and the city of Macon having great industrial, and commercial growth which can be seen primarily in the Northern and Southern areas of Macon, and Bibb Co. Many of the current mayoral candiates have the best at hand for the city of Macon, and want to secure that Macon, is the Economic Backbone of Central Georgia.
This is my 100th post since joining this site in Feb 2007, and it has been a great time communicating with people from this site. I hope to continue to help people, and communicate while showing the greater perspective of Macon, and Middle Georgia.

For Macon, GA to be so bad, many people filled Luther Williams Field for the first time in over 4 years, as Macon's Professional Baseball Team The Music made its debut. The stadium is only equiped to hold 3,500 people but 5,000+ showed up for the event, and were turned around at the door. People from everywhere came to seem Baseball return to Macon, and Middle Georgia.

Why is everyone so phobic about the mall now??
Just because there was one shooting incident?
Those can happen anywhere...
