One of you mentioned the high cost of housing in Madison... at one point outside of the city (south) does the price start dropping yet you're close enough to enjoy the Madison "positives"?

It's tough to actually say--The purchase of a house is okay (ours was sold for around $240K), but it's the taxes that will get you. They are prevalent everywhere in Dane county, though. The 'burbs (including those south of the city), Oregon, Stoughton, McFarland, Fitchburg, Verona, Belleville, etc. all have these taxes to an extent. You may have to go out of the county to find a kind of relief from taxes.

For our $240K house on the far east side of Madison, we paid $4800 in annual property taxes the last time before we moved--that has held fairly steady over the years (even though they "dropped" the rate--they just number crunched--dropped the rate of tax, but increased the estimated value of the home--beware of this, it's a standard practice. They will never actually lower taxes in Madison).

Go here and type "Madison" in the keyword field and you'll get all the opinions you could possibly want.
