I have a client coming into town tomorrow and he's asked about the Indian community in Madison.
I grew up in Madison and have met many people from India or people of Indian descent, but have no clue as to whether there is a tight knit community of people from India here in Madison.
The people I know or have known have lived all over the city and in different neighborhoods.
Does anyone have any perspective on this that they'd like to pass along.
I'd like for this gentleman to feel as comfortable here as possible.
Thanks!

I have a friend who is of Indian decent and it sounds like there is a fairly close knit community. That said, and I say this as someone who really tries not to judge others, it sounds less than positive.

Not sure what you're asking. Did someone really ask if the Indians are a "tight knit community"? It's almost impossible to answer a question like that. I can tell you there are approx 5000 Indians (including Americans of Indian descent) in the Madison area. There are about 6 or 7 Indian restaurants, 3 or 4 grocery stores, and a couple of temples.

No he did not ask if there was a tight knit community. What he has asked is if there would be areas that he would be more likely to feel comfortable in. He also wanted to know about the Indian Community in general.
I thank you for your perspective.
Megan, what did you mean when you said that it was less than positive?
I spoke to a friend who is of Indian descent and she seemed to be very happy with the community and felt that they were a very positive group...

Amy - My friend tells lots of stories of interactions where people are way too involved with the intimate details of each other's lives. I mean *really* intimate details. The people he talks about are also quite mean to each other.

There is a quite a big Indian Community in Madison. There are also various Indian social groups in Madison. Is your client moving to Madison for good? Or is visiting the place? Also making friends with Indians or being a part of the Indian social circle depends on various things. For eg. if he is married and has kids he is likely to meet more people from the school, play groups etc. Also if he moves to an apartment complex where there are lot of Indians he is likely to meet Indians faster.

As Megan said - Indians do share things with each other cos this is our home away from home. Not many of us having families in the same city so our friends become our family. That being said no can involve themselves into the "intimate" details of your lives unless you let them.

I moved to Madison a year back and I am still looking to meet and connect with Indians here.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

I have seen many indians who live in greenbriar apartments off of tree lane in the west side. Lately every where I turn in every neiborhood I see many of them. Hope that helps.
