Six graduate students at the University of Wisconsin are attempting an experiment in carpooling. Our goal is to run a real-time carpool experiment for the week of October 21st, from 7:30 to 9:30 am, and again from 4:30 to 6:30 pm.

We are looking for thoughtful collaborators who can contribute to a living carpool system.

Offer feedback on what works, and what doesn’t.

Collaborators will post their departures in a google doc before they leave for work.

Other collaborators will contact you via text message.

All collaborators will be on your route, and going to the same general destination.

For safety, backgrounds of all collaborators will be checked.

Five pieces of essential information: 1. Name, 2. phone number, 3. location, 4. Departure time, 5. Silent backseat ride or Chatty ride.

Post user profiles in a google doc to find other collaborators with similar interests.

Destination must be downtown Capitol/University area

All rides will cost $3.

Graduate student team will be working behind the scenes and responding instantly to any and all feedback.

Where in Middleton is the carpool starting? Middleton is rather spread out.

Has this experiment passed the UW Instutional Review Board (IRB)'s human subjects review? Not sure if you need the IRB approval or not for this particular experiment, but it may be worth looking into.

Do you have liability waviers for participants to sign? It may be a good idea in case the carpool car gets in an accident, breaks down, someone gropes someone else in the back seat, etc. The probability of this stuff happening is low, but when you work with the general public, you never know who you will get. It's better to protect yourselves ahead of time.

Also, the researchers typically pay the participants for their involvement in the experiment, not the other way around.

Just thinking of ways to help you get more participants. I do not live in Middleton, so unfortunately I cannot physically help you out. Please let us know how it goes!

I was going to say the same thing about the fee. Plus, carpooling has a two fold purpose - help the environment and save money. For $3 I could make it from one end of Madison to the the other and back again.
