For the best view of the downtown skyline, drive north on John Nolen Drive. It may not be the biggest skyline in the world, but in my opinion it's one of the prettiest I have seen.

Thanks! Also, I have been surprised about some of the traffic along the beltway and other roads. Is this fairly typical or is it because of all the students that have returned for fall semester?

It is a bit heavier because of the students, but during rush hour it is always a parking lot.

well you hit the perfect time to arrive up there; the annual Taste of Madison downtown will be on (one of the city's big festivals), which can allow you to get a nice idea on the food of the area as well as several stages of live music. Also take a stroll down State St, and walk over to the top of Monona Terrace to view that lake.
Note when we lived up there, the capital building would be open on Saturdays where you can go in and check it out; I can't recall if they leave it open on a weekend like this but something to think about if you go up to the Farmers Market on another Saturday.....

The taste of madison runs from Saturday, september 1, 2-8:30 pm and Sunday, september 2, 11 am to 7 pm around the capital square. They pretty much have food from all parts of the world and other wacky things like cookie dough egg rolls.

I will check out the taste of Madison tomorrow. I was too busy moving today to go down and check it out.
