This article seems to sum up very well the different realities of Madison. Many posters on this board (as well as people seeking information) inquire and write about the traditional Madison, but the new Madison is reality for the majority of people, outside of the downtown, campus and isthmus areas.

But the president of our City Council says Madison isn’t really one city, anyway, it’s two. And she suggests the more traditional one does not really understand the emerging one.

Traditional Madison is mostly older, white, relatively prosperous and politically progressive. Many members are baby boom lefties who came here for school or jobs and stayed. They still revel in a culture that values education and strong neighborhoods and a “Berkeley of the Midwest” vibe that boosts our civic self-esteem.

By contrast, Shiva Bidar-Sielaff says emerging Madison is much more racially and ethnically diverse, certainly less well-off, and is growing mostly in out-of-sight residential pockets.
