When I was in High School I worked at Woodman's...and I never saw any profits fromt he company. My memory is kind of foggy on those details, but I do remember union dues being paid...and it being "employee-owned", but it isn't like the emplyees run the show or anything...maybe Drover can give us more details?

Cub has not been bag your own groceries here in Madison for quite some time. I do spend a lot of time in the St Paul area and they do still have bag your own.
I don't like Woodmans-way to crowded and I cannot ever find anyone to help me when I need it. The service just sucks! I'd rather pay more for good service. I used to LOVE Kohl's and really miss them. Now I go to Cub and Copp's.

for some reason, bagging your own groceries has never seemed to work in wisconsin. the places that have tried that generally have hurt their business.
here in minnesota, most of the grocery stores are bag your own unless you go to the fancier ones like byerly's or kowalski's. i guess having the lowest prices is what people here are most worried about.
i've never been a fan of cub even though that's where i do all my shopping here. there aren't many good options close to me, cub stores are probably 80% of what is here - - there are 3 of them that are pretty close by and the only other one is a Rainbow, and they are no better. The SuperTargets are OK. If there was a Byerly's around, I'd probably go to that.
In Madison I used to like Copp's - once in a while I'd go to Woodman's but the west side Woodman's was such a dump and they didn't take credit cards. I think that has changed but that was a big deterrent at the time.

Nope, they still don't take credit cards. It's cash or debit card, maybe local check.

You forgot to list Centry and Whole Foods!!!
My favorite grocery stores are BY FAR Whole Foods or Centry - Centry is located in the Hilldale Mall - they have classical music, great delli, fresh fish... and Whole Foods offers shoppers EVERYTHING "organic" - a bit pricier, but who can put a price on one's health?

Copps. And here is a tip from an unfortunate insider, Copps and Pick N Save are exactly the same. Same sales, same owners, pretty much same everything. If you want to stick it to Copps, for example, don't go shop at Pick N Save because Roundys is coming out sweet no matter what.

Variety
Don't forget Brennans for produce and cheese. The Asian markets on Park Street have good selections and the Japanese/Korean shop in the Shorewood shopping center makes an interesting stop.
Outside of Madison, there are some Piggly Wiggly supermarkets (Waunakee, Sauk, and Cottage Grove). Verona has Millers, an independent supermarket.

..is the Sentry (Sentinel?) supermarket still around at the Midvale shopping mall? I used to shop there in 1999-2000,and found it to be better-than-average, with very good service. And as I recall, Kohl's was also quite good, but I have no idea if it still exists.

You folks need to get yourselves a Wegman's! We have them here in the Mid-Atlantic. They're very similar to a Whole Foods store, but Wegman's is consistently ranked amongst the best companies in the nation to work for.
