I'll be graduating from a UW college in a few years and would like to know how the job market is for teachers (or any job in particular)? Has it improved over the recent years? What progress can you predict for the job market based on current observation? Sorry if that's too many questions. If you don't have enough knowledge to answer my questions, please be honest! I won't get upset!

Check out the HR website for the school district. There are certain in demand fields like exceptional education and bilingual teacher positions with certification that have several openings. Same for higher education Math and Science courses. Everything else is Slim picking and I don't see much variation in this trend in Madison for the forseeable future.

I'm afraid there are far more applicants than jobs in the Madison Metro Area when it comes to teaching positions. The people who have the best chances are those who student taught in MMSD or one of the neighboring districts because, but they and their references are known quantities. Some say it is not good to go into the sub pool, but I've known several people who secured permanent positions because of their good records as subs.

They have a deadline for applying for the next school year and it is usually in January, but the website doesn't list it. I would contact them and find out when the deadline is.

my only experience with this sort of question on potential teaching jobs is several of my daughter's friends all graduated with teaching degrees from the UW system several years ago, and i think just one of them made it in the field (recently). Now there could be multiple reasons for this, from perhaps wanting to be in just 1 district, to specializing in one area of teaching, to maybe just not standing out above other candidates or even districts having to make cutbacks on hirings. But i know they had a tough time in it, a couple never making it past child care jobs.
So by doing early 'homework' and maybe being somewhat flexible in field/location, that may help when the degree comes and it's time to enter the workforce.

good luck!
