I agreed with most of your post (and gave you rep), except for this sentence.
Are Chicago's upscale residents also elite poseurs who wish they had enough money to play with the "coke-snobs" in New York or London? Upscale is upscale. Milwaukee does have some of it. Sanford's comes to mind as a truly upscale restaurant with really great food. Milwaukee certainly has a touch of old money and class, but it seems to be fading since most of the companies the old money elite ran have either merged or went defunct. Milwaukee needs to become a better generator of new business if it wants to survive. It's completely clear that the old Milwaukee companies won't sustain the economy very far into the future.

Did you say Milwaukee is "hypersegregated?" Are you referring to that study that was published in that highly credible publication "Jet Magazine"? I know I always get all my information and credible reports from "Jet Magazine" !!!!
The fact is Jet Magazine used a segregation index figure when they published that report in 2002. The outdated and inaccurate index, which was developed in the 1950s, is based mostly on the % of blacks in a particular community. ????? In 2003, the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee conducted and published a far more detailed, and very in depth report about "hypersegregation" in Milwaukee, and other cities around the U.S. Their findings? Milwaukee is segregated, but not nearly as much as was portrayed by "Jet Magazine"
Milwaukee was actually found to be the 42nd most INTEGRATED city in America. The collegiates actually looked at race/ethnicity on each individual city block in Milwaukee to arrive at their figures.
So while there is a problem with segregation in all cities, Milwaukee is not even close to being the worst. Here is the JS online version of the report: JS Online: Study explodes myth of area's 'hypersegregation'

Regardless to the MJS spin,Milwaukee is indeed one of(if not the )most segregated big cities in the country.

So there's the jealousy thing?

Actually, I would probably put Kenosha/Racine & possibly Sheboygan as the armpit as Wisconsin, not Milwaukee

Here is my two cents for everyone in regards to Milwaukee, since I grew up in Waukesha county. For all you people from Madison calling Milwaukee a rust belt couldn't be more far off. Here's something I just recently found that you all should read... Milwaukee rises to 16th among best metro areas for business - JSOnline ... It states that Milwaukee has just moved up from the 18th best metro area for job growth, young professionals...and so on to the 16th best in the NATION. Now this is just one reward of many that the Milwaukee area is receiving due to their hard work to turn things around since the manufacturing decline over the years. Milwaukee has the new Milwaukee 7 organization hoping to turn things around just as Denver, CO did in the past. Not a bad city to model ours after. And here's something Madison doesn't have...Chicago. Leaders of the area are starting to recognize this and hopefully public transportation between the two will get better. Just recently Waukesha County and Ozaukee County were just listed in the top 10 counties in the NATION to raise a family. No one else from Wisconsin made the list. It was based on Income, Housing, School success rates, and so on. Sure maybe Dane county has had places like Middleton in the best place to live, but the Milwaukee area has also had the same success. Not number one, but Waukesha was on the list somewhere in the 30's and their may have been a few others. Maybe Milwaukee isn't the wealth of Chicago like some of you have stated, but last time I did a report on the area Their were 5 registered billionaires in Waukesha County and One in Ozaukee. None in Dane County and the Menards Guy was listed in Eau Claire area. The only changes since that i'm aware of is that a billionaire now has bought a condo downtown Milwaukee somewhere. Milwaukee area has many great night life areas listed on here, has many great colleges including Marquette, UW-Milwaukee, Cardinal Stritch, MATC, WCTC, Carrol, UW-Waukesha, and many many more. And obviously Madison has arguably the best college in state in UW-Madison, but Milwaukee will still attract young professionals all over the world to come and work as it turns itself around. Waukesha county is actually the 3rd largest in terms of population and something that many of you may not know...it's the 2nd largest in terms of tax base...yes larger than Dane county. Not only due to the many nice suburbs here, but also the many businesses. Actually Waukesha County was growing at such a fast rate that they were expected to pass up Milwaukee County by 2020 in Tax Base. However, Milwaukee has since been adding more Condos, and rejuvenating the downtown area slowing the gap, but Waukesha County is still growing faster. Along with such great place to live in Milwaukee and the surrounding area it has some of the best places to eat out, or even go out in the Club/Lounge scene. The area has several professional sports teams and great concerts all the time. Their really is a lot of stuff to do here and it will only get better. The best part is that Chicago is only 70 miles away so if you want to make the trip for a show, or festivities down there it's within reach as many friends of mine and I have done in the past so many times. So if you want to Live 20 stories+ into the night sky, or own a large house out on a nice Lake in Waukesha County, or Live along a nice area of Lake Michigan in Ozaukee County you have your choices.

Very we'll put I've been arguing many of your same points and since I've traveled all over the us and lived in many different cities, I have seen how nice Milwaukee really is. Actually Milwaukee's city limits to Chicago's city limits is only 65 miles away, the same as Madison to Milwaukee. So if I had to choose between Madison's state street or Chicago's Rush street or many other nightlife districts, if it's going to take me the same time to go to madison why not just go to Chicago. Chicago is only an hour train ride from downtown milwaukee or you can hop on the train station at the airport for those on the southside. I now go to chicago very often and thanks to my Ipass I can make it from downtown Milw to Chicago's south loop in an hour. This myth that it takes 2.5 hrs to get to chicago is a bunch of crap, learn how to drive people. I used to hate Milwaukee but then I went and lived else where and when I came back 5yrs ago I have now fallin' completely in love with the entire Milwaukee area...and Chicago too after all isn't Chicago Milwaukee's most southern suburb!!!! lol.
