Hi

I'm coming to Madison this week for a friend's wedding, and I was wondering if there might be a good Mexican restaurant somewhere downtown (we'll be staying near the Capitol).

I'm looking for something reasonably authentic that serves Mexican food like you get in Mexico (or, say, a local hole-in-the-wall taquería in Chicago.) None of this white-people crap you generally find in the States.

I saw a place online called, I think, Taco Bros - the name makes me suspicious, but the Yelp reviews seemed favorable. Can anyone share any thoughts?

Thanks to all!

Taquería Guadalajara on Park St. is a 5 minute Uber drive from downtown. It sounds like what you are looking for...

Casa de Lara has a weird, dated ambiance but the food is quite good.

I've never been to Mexico, but my favorite place downtown is Francisco's. They make a decent mole. Their prices are really reasonable, too. I also enjoyed El Sabor de Puebla on Williamson Street. It is a bit of a walk from downtown. They have grow their own vegetables. They are a really new restaurant. The food was fabulous, but they need to work a bit on their service. They also don't have a liquor license yet.

I will second this! Very good authentic Mexican and lots of food for the price. I have a few Hispanic friends and acquaintances who also swear by this place over any other place in Madison.

Not downtown but Tex Tubb's Taco Palace on Atwood is great.

I left Madison eons ago and met a friend there last time I was back. Loved it.

I agree. It's a different atmosphere, but the food has been pretty good the couple times I've been there.

Thanks - didn't end up having much time to go exploring, as the wedding festivities turned out to be more or less a continuous block of time over five days! But I did stumble across a place on N. Broom called A La Brasa. I had some enchiladas en mole that were quite tasty. So that did the trick.

At any rate, I had a great time in Madison!
