Black Hair Care in Wisconsin
I recently moved to the Madison. I'm finding it difficult to find a hair stylist that can "really" do african american hair. I am willing to travel if needed. If anyone can refer me to someone good in the Madison, Milwaukee or Appleton area that would be great! I would like to consider a weave in the future and need someone that I can trust to lay my hair out....HELP!!!!

You should find some info in this thread; it seems the consensus is that if you want decent black hair care in Wisconsin, you have to schlep it to Milwaukee.

There was a similar thread a while back about someonein Green Bay with the same issue. I don't know if that's the thread Drover put, but Green Bay/Appleton are worse off than Madison for African American hair care...and that is why I think most people mentioned places in Milwaukee.
While Madison's African American community isn't huge, the city is large enough that there are place out there for you. Personaly I couldn't recommend any, but check in the phone book, the Madison Times or ask an African American person whose hair looks nicely done. I don't think you have to leave Madison fo this unless you specifically know of a better person or place elsewhere (Chicago, Milwaukee).

Actually I know someone who is a black woman, living in Madison. She says that there is a major dearth of Black hair salons in Madison. She started coming to Milwaukee on a regular basis to get her hair done.
This is one person, to be sure, but I would trust her opinion since African American hair care is a topic she knows far more about than I.

Did you ever find a good black hairstylist in Madison (who can cut and style)? I recently moved here from Detroit, and I'm having problems finding all the things that have always be readily accessible to me.

Just posting an update....There is really a drought of black hair care professionals in the Madison area. I did find a salon near the West Towne Mall called JP's Hair Design.....they seem to get a lot of business by both males & females. My husband has been taking my son there and we are very impressed with the set-up and customer service.

I have been a stylist for years specializing in chemicals and ethnic hair cuts black dominican and asian. I do perms/ relaxers, basic braids, blow outs, hot comb, double , triple processes highlights, doobies, precision cuts, flat twists, and basic locking. I am not good at weaves. I have been out of "the biz" professionally for some years I LOVE working with chemicals (but developed allergy) still have my certificate from school. I am looking to move to madison so when i get out there if you need a touch up or the kids need a basic hair do. I would be glad to help. I dont do anything Glamorous but i know more than the basics. I have done work on the side for all of my family and most of my friends for many years now.

So, Drover, did you ever find a satisfactory salon? I just moved to Madison and am in a similar situation, needing a good salon for my normal hair care.
