I think this whole thread is weird. I can't believe some of you tout the idea of diversity in Madison but are clearly biased about any neighborhood other than the west or near west side. Oh and Willy St is cool? I beg to differ. Makes me scratch my head when you stereo type the whole east side, Stoughton and Sun Prairie to name a few. Some of you need to get out more. Honestly I think most well traveled people wouldn't consider Madison especially desirable, period.

Diversity is a good thing, but just because an area has a high percentage of people of color does not make it a good area.

Around the country, not just Madison, low income crime ridden areas do have a higher percentage of minority residents. Unfortunate, but true. I think it is totally "weird" and off base to tell the physicist, who happens to be black, that he or she would be most comfortable living in Northport Apartments.

That was pretty uncalled for. I can state my opinion here just as well as you can. I was born at Madison General if that tells you anything, and if I had my druthers not by choice. Not everyone can just pick up and move to their desired locations, especially in these economic times. I have lived other places and it's a big world out there. Madison isn't the worst but I certainly wouldn't call it the best.

There have been broad generalizations made about certain areas of the city as well as small towns which I think are one sided.

Mad420-

You are right it was uncalled for. That's why I deleted it. My only excuse is that I love the city and get tired of people seeming to take pleasure in bashing it. People who haven't even lived here in a great many years. I hate the place I grew up, but I don't spend all my time and energy telling people about why. In fact, I actually made a positive post about one aspect of it recently.

I didn't actually apologize for the post in that last response. I am sorry, I was out of line. I still don't like the tone of your post, but I had no right to lash out at you like that.

Fine we're square then. We are all entitled to our own opinions. I have read some of your posts and don't agree with your broad generalizations about the east side for example. I signed up and now I can give my take on things. I actually like Janesville.

Unless the "North Side" has become the next Allied Drive in a very quick period of time, I still don't think it's anything to be avoided. I wouldn't want to live in the more trailer parky parts, I have to admit. But Maple Bluff is quite nice.

Pros of Maple Bluff:
Lake Mendota!
Easier Access to I-94, the airport
Close to Warner Park
Can buy booze after 9:00 PM

Pros of Nakoma:
The Arboretum!
Better surrounding neighborhoods
Closer to a walkable pedestrian strip (Monroe)
Those weird drainage ditch thingies in the median of Manitou Way
Did I mention better surrounding neighborhoods?

Both have a beautiful housing stock and lovely people.

Default Maple Bluff vs Nakoma

Both parts of Madison are nice but I would have to say Maple Bluff is nicer. Maple Bluff has its own police and fire departments. There is a very nice country club with tennis courts, swimming pool, and very good food, oh and a nice very well maintained golf course. Sure it is expensive to have a membership but village residents have some benefits like swimming and golfing, and tennis on a semi-limited basis(2 day per week swimming). There is also a gymnasium with open gym times, and 4-5 parks one being right on the water with a beach house, dock and sandy beach. As another person mentioned it faces west and has the sunsets. Also it is a very nice place to have a dog as it is very pet friendly. Nice bike rides and walks and has its own marina that you can rent a slip to keep your boat on Mendota. As for people they are people what can you say? There are some jerks and some nice people everywhere. I think for the most part people are very friendly. And as for schools Marquette and O'keffe are great schools within Madison that is a reasonable distance from Maple Bluff. It is up to you to decide East or West with high school. The village also has very nice summer programs for kids for people who are at work and just general other classes including yoga and a so on both kids and adults. Overall Maple Bluff just seems like a better community. It is also centrally located and is close to the downtown, airport, mall, interstates and the university. The west side is just better for shopping I think, a little nicer overall generally but not enough to proclaim Nakoma better. Nakoma is cool, but is not Maple Bluff. Maple Bluff has huge beautiful trees and has bluffs and is on the water. This is not even close. You want to start comparing something it would have to be Shorewood Hills not Nakoma. It all comes down to where you work and what matters to you and if you have kids. I think both are great for kids. With no kids, hands down Maple Bluff. The area around Maple Bluff is a litte industrialized should we say, but when you enter Maple Bluff it is like you changed worlds or something. So in ending it is all choice and wouldn't bet against either. But what do I know...
