Um, not a really great part of town. In fact, I would go so far as to say that that region is about as close as Madison gets to a ghetto. Rents are low there for a very good reason. When my daughter was younger and much more foolish than she is now, she moved in with a boyfriend in an apartment complex right where you're looking (could even be the same one that you're considering) and I can tell you that I was sweating bullets until she realized what a jerk the boy was and moved back out.

If you need an inexpensive place to live, you'd be better off looking in some of the outlying communities around Madison than going to the cheapest apartment complexes in the city. Sun Prairie has some less-expensive options, as does Stoughton. Fitchburg is tricky; some areas are as bad as the neighborhood that you're looking at, others are extreeeeemely expensive and upscale, but there are a few sort of inbetween neighborhoods. Verona is mostly upscale but there are a couple of complexes on Perry Parkway that used to be less expensive. Middleton has gotten pretty upscale but you might find something in Cross Plains.

I know the apartment complex you are looking at, too. I would concur with MidwesternBookWorm although I think the term "ghetto" might be overstating the problem. There are some really nice young couples living there. I used to pet sit and I was involved in cat rescue and met two couples. I was nervous to pet sit there, but never had a problem. They also have a really nice Boys and Girls Club that provides a positive safe place for kids to hang out.

Now the Allied Drive area, that is closer to the reality of a ghetto. I was a librarian who did outreach in that area and I truly felt like I was taking my life into my own hands going in there. It is what you'd expect - gangs of teen age kids without any purposeful activities who will try to intimidate you. Unemployed single mothers with scads of kids- half of which are crying because the other half are torturing them. People just sitting around obviously high, drunk or both.

ya cheap rent is one thing but i don;t think you would be happy there. i am 24 and have lived and worked in madison for over 5 years now and i like westside the best. it just depends what your looking for. downtown can be nice if you don;t have to drive much around the rushhours and you aren;t to close to campus and the eastside isn;t bad. but park st., south town and the nortside aren;t the best. you are going to be happier paying more rent than going cheap and living in a bad part of town. been there and down that.

Horrible, horrible area. Don't live anywhere near here. I've lived in Madison since 1996, and this area has gone from bad to horrible.

This is Madison's answer to the ghetto. Anybody who tells you different DOESN'T live there nor are they familiar with the area. It is a shady area where there are shootings, gangs, drug deals, roudy parties and an unsafe local park. If you are looking for low rent in a diverse environment, then those are the two pluses. Crime is bad. If you don't believe us, check with the police department.

Apartments get better on the other side of the beltline, on Fish Hatchery Rd, but even there you have rif raff. You really get what you pay for, and Madison isn't exactly an affordable place to live.
