People from outstate wisconsin often see the rental prices in madison and are somewhat shocked, thinking the best answer is to save some money by living out on the edge of town or even in a neighboring town. Been there and done that - don't recommend it.

I don't think you would have too much trouble finding a roommate or two and getting a place on the west or SW side of madison, but outside madison or middleton in might be more difficult. People want to be in the city or near where newer apartments and places to shop are located.

For renting, after a while I learned to never rent a place without a washer/dryer in the apartment because the coin operated stuff is always getting hoarded and is never available except in the middle of the night.

If you're counting on college roomies, make sure apt is on bus lines. No parking on campus & almost free bus pass makes this crucial.
