Default Being mature, single in Madison?

I'm considering a job offer there. Everything else seems to look great, and a down-to-earth midwest place looks much better than the left coast right now. How do single people over forty fare there? Hey, sometimes we can't help it if we're single and we'd like to meet some nice folks to hang with. Any answers/suggestions appreciated!

I'll be 41 this May and I've found volunteering to be a good way to meet people. I'm not, nor have I ever been, a barfly and I work out of my home so it is a little more challenging for me to meet people. We have a fairly active meetup.com community here and I've meant to check it out, but I've been a little chicken hearted.

I've only lived in the Midwest, but people seem to think we're a friendly lot so it is probably easier than the West Coast. I can say Madison is the most friendly place of the 4 places I've lived.

Hi,

I'm 37 and single and have lived in Madison since 1996. I have to say I've had a difficult time meeting people here (yes, for all those years!). I've met plenty of people who are into beer, volleyball, beer, bowling, biking, beer...you get the point. Bottom line, if you are very interested in outdoor pursuits, with or without beer, you will find it easy to meet people. Unfortunately I'm not interested in any of those things - people are nice, but it's been difficult to find true companions.

Megan1967 - I've been meaning to do the meetups too, but never got around to it!

I'm moving back to the east coast and am hoping to have better luck there

I think that its not a bad place to meet people. Granted, I am only 25. But, I work at a hospital with lots of great, attractive, single women in their 30s and 40s. We all went out to the bars together (try the ones near the Capital). Also, try Hoofers Outdoors Club, which is open to people of all ages (not just college students.) Or else the libraries, local plays, theater, dog parks, bookstores, sporting events, etc.

It is a small city that tends to be college dominated. But, if you look around there are tons of professional adults that are very friendly. Madison is a great place! Good luck!

I just turned 37 on Saturday...and I could NOT possibly agree with katreese more!! Madison is a VERY difficult place to meet people. I've lived here since 98 and I still know SO few people! I JUST signed up for the meetups site and am excited that it will make a difference. Good luck to you, lynseyg!

The thing is...the midwest is friendly, but it can also be hard to meet people, because natives tend to flock together. And, yes, if you're not into the traditional "beer and camping" culture, it may also make things a bit harder.

It is easier to meet people if you're college aged, though. New 20-somethings are constantly in and out because of school.

I like to camp and go to the parks and stuff...but what is one to do? Grab my tent and go pitch it "kinda near a bunch of people" and ask them to be your friend? CAMP STALKER!
My point is that even if you have common interests with people up here, you gotta meet them to do whatever it is that you like to do with them.....the meeting is the hard part. This being said 10 years after I moved here. It kinda sucks, I'm not gonna lie. I mean, I'm basically happy here, I have my daughter and all...but I'd just love to meet a bunch of people to call whenever and go have some laughs.

Katreese,
So did/are you moving to the East Coast then?

"Getting to know people".... Tha's one reason why I keep returning to this section. True, I can't really meet anyone through the electronic board but by responces of people who live in Madison helps out. I'm moving in August to Madison and it's a fresh start for me.

I don't know anyone there. At least I can 'talk' to some people through these posts.

Yep, I'm moving in about a month. I'm hoping there will be different opportunities to meet people that I haven't experienced here. I feel like I've tried everything possible (here), so I'm not sure what else is out there. Here's hoping!
