I just moved from San Antonio to Madison (hallelujah, goodbye horrible, hot, sticky, humidity), and I leave my doctor of over 15 years, unfortunately. I have been taking ADHD meds (Adderall) for about as long and was diagnosed as an adult. I'm currently "out of network" so I'll be self paying for any doctor visits until I change my insurance carrier so I'm hoping it won't be more than a few hundred bucks but who knows.
Anyway can anyone recommend a doctor who they know handles/treats/prescribes for adult ADHD? I don't need to refill for a month which I'm hoping will be enough time to get my records transferred. I know new docs are hesitant to prescribe a simulant medication without. I've also been told about the drug problem here which is nothing new to me coming from San Antonio but I was rather that it may make some doctors weary.
Hoping I can maybe get the name of two or three to contact. Thanks for any help!

First of all, I would think that your previous physician could still offer refills whether you moved or not or am I perhaps missing something here? Not sure if your prescription has expired and your previous physician will not renew it or if you just feel that you can not get a current prescription refilled because you are out of your network now. If you still have renewals left on your prescription then I do not believe that prescriptions affect whether you are out of network or not. So that makes a difference on how to answer your question.

Because, if you have refills left on your current prescription and you have gotten your past prescriptions at a major national retailer (like Walgreens, Walmart, CVS, etc) then you are in their nationwide database and should be able to have it refilled anywhere in the U.S at that major retailer. You will just have to pay full price for them if you no longer have insurance. But both Walgreens and Walmart both have options where you can get certain prescription medications for $4, or 75% off, type deals.

Otherwise, if you no longer have refills left and that is why you need an adult ADHD physician, I do believe you have to get insurance here first and then get a primary care doctor established first who can then refer you to someone who specializes in adult ADHD. I doubt you can just go straight to a doctor who specializes in adult ADHD but I honestly can't be certain on that because I am not absolutely certain of you situation.

If I am misunderstanding you and you can actually go straight to an adult ADHD physician and bypass everything else, then these are the results that came up on a Google search for adult ADHD physicians in the Madison area. You will just have to weed through them and start calling around:
