Any area of Madison that contains a predominately black populas generally will also come with headaches. It's sad, because there are many black people in these neighborhoods that are decent and hard working. The ones that cause trouble.......MIXED IN WITH OTHER RACES.....are just making it worse and giving these areas a bad name. If I were you, I would worry about finding a clean and affordable place to live REGARDLESS of where it's at.

For anyone else who has this question, as a black female (I detest the term African-American!), Madison is NOT Milwaukee or Chicago. It is predominately white so in my opinion there is no such area that is predominately black. The only exceptions to this unfortunately are some of the areas that are low income. If living in a predominately black area is that important to you, I would not move here. You'd be better off in the Milwaukee area.

Madison has a few areas that are almost entirely African-America, but these are probably not places you'd want to live.

Maybe check out the near east side Williamson Street neighborhood. It's reasonably diverse. South and North sides will be good for African American services (e.g. hair salons), but there's good and bad in terms of accommodation. I can't generalize because I've been to some very bad areas and some extremely nice neighborhoods in both areas. I'm also not African American, so it's just what I have observed. The Park St area is kind of notorious for crime, etc., but an African American coworker of mine said she'd lived there 40 years and had never had a problem. I think you just need to check out each apartment and keep your eyes open. Ask a lot of questions. Ask to speak with existing tenants.

There's black people in Madison ??? I've heard this to be true but I don't know. Maybe we could send a TV camera crew just to make sure. I hear they have a college too but I'm not sure if the uh,little ten is really a division 1 conference.
WE ARE MU!!! in the BIG EAST.

I too am looking to move to Madison, my question isn't so much an area of the African American living, location as much as are there any African American Churches. I hope no one gets offended by the qustion of where are the African Americans in Madison- I believe a lot of people such as myself we are looking for one thing that is familiar, I have been living here in Oshkosh 3 1/2 yrs and unfortunately there aren't many if us. I grew up in St.Louis, Missouri and being here is such a culture shock, I was raised with 17 brothers and sisters all different races, but to live somewhere that you can't relate is hard. I said all of that to say this. I am considering to move to Madison as well to be closer to activities, education, museums, churches but I am curious if there is an African American cultural life.( beauty Salons, beauty supply, Church) Please tell me there is some real fried chicken in Madison ethnic joke. But i just pray no one is offened when we ask are there any African American community activity in Madison. We are just seeking familiar faces in a sea of strangers.

You'll definitely have more to relate to in Madison than in Oshkosh. But there are still only a couple small pockets of Madison that are majority black, and compared to other cities I've lived, it still appears to me that the black population in Madison isn't quite numerous enough to form a cohesive black community replete with black institutions and black-owned business districts and all that. I believe the Madison population is still less than 10% black. That 10% is still a solid 20,000 people so you wouldn't be a curiosity or novelty there... but I don't think you'd experience the sort of epiphany where you think to yourself, "alas, I feel at home!" either.

I have been offered a nice engineering job but I have my doubts about moving to Madison Wisconsin from New York. I need to ask the members of this forum, would I be discriminated against if I move there. As an African American, will I have trouble with crosses being burnt in my lawn and so on? (Maybe I watch too much tv). The housing prices out there look pretty cheap but I do not believe it is worth it if some people around there will give me a hard time. Can someone help me with this?

Oh, my God, no!
Madison had enough minorities that they pretty much blend in. There are, however, enough people here who are originally from other small towns in the state (where there is next to no diversity), that you *might* have to endure some stares on rare occasions, but otherwise the biggest pain you could encounter is the pseudo liberalism of some people which makes them feel compelled to befriend someone *just* because they are a minority. You'll soon learn to recognize this sort and figure out who really just wants to be your friend for you as a person as opposed to your ethnicity.
